It’s a brand new year – the 14th! – for the Esoteric Order of Gamers, and I’m kicking it off with a new project – Kings of War by Mantic Games! Will this be your new favourite game of fantasy battles? Unboxing Video: Burn the Fort from Indigenous Action Media

In Burn the Fort, each player takes the role of a historic Narrative American warrior fighting to stop colonial invasion of their lands. Players take turns gathering and playing cards, trading, battling wagons, and gathering fire tokens and the necessary arrowhead tokens to burn the fort.

Everyone starts the game in an alliance, but alliances can be broken. To win the game, players can choose how much they wish to work together while facing colonial forces. With each wagon that reaches the fort, the train moves forward towards the Golden Spike that will bring mass colonial invasion and an end to the fierce anti-colonial resistance.

Burn the Fort is a semi-cooperative game in which you’ll face history in challenging and empowering ways.

Unboxing Video: 23 Knives from Play to Z

In 23 Knives, players take on the role of a Roman citizen with one of three allegiances: a loyalist to Caesar, a liberator of Rome, or an opportunist biding their time. Throughout the game, you travel through Rome, manipulating other citizens and swaying them to your cause. At the end of the game, if 23 or more knives are in the Curia, Caesar is dead and the liberator most committed to killing Caesar wins. With fewer than 23 knives, the loyalist most dedicated to saving Caesar wins. Opportunists are those who linger, waiting to shift the fate of Caesar at the last moment, and if they do, they win as a team.

Completely Epic! – The Armoured Clash Battle Report

Peter and Dylan play Armoured Clash, the epic scale tabletop miniatures game from Warcradle!

Warcradle really hit this epic scale arame out of the park – Armoured Clash is a great game, especially with a design team including ex-Games Workshop designer James Hewitt. I’ve been meaning to film a battle report for the game and here it is finally. Enjoy!

Fantasy and Big Pixels in a Board Game? Unboxing THE LAST SPELL

Everything is awesome!

Peter unboxes the tower defence game with big pixels – The Last Spell by Tabula Games.

Tabula Games make some very interesting games, as I’ve said many times before, and their latest is something a bit different – the board game incarnation of a popular tower defence video game. It’s called The Last Spell and leans heavily into the retro gaming aesthetic, with big pixel art and lovely little miniatures. The game is broken into two distinct phases (that even have separate rulebooks): the day, when you build your defences, get your resources, and buy equipment, and the night, when hordes of undead greeblies pour out of the purple mist and try to ruin your evening in a very permanent way. I’m looking forward to trying this one out, but in the meantime, check out my unboxing of the base game and expansions, freshly delivered after the Kickstarter campaign!

I made a lot of videos for Games Workshop last year, but unfortunately this year they’ve seen fit to not send me a single thing up to this point this year. So it was nice to see Blood Bowl: Season Three land on the doorstep. This is a very nice new edition with two great new teams, some slight tweaks to the rules, and some very useful new status counters. Peter unboxes The Lord of the Rings: Fate of the Fellowship by Z-Man Realms!

Pandemic is a game that doesn’t really excite me much anymore, and I’ve played the spin-off Clone Wars and been underwhelmed. But this new evolution of the system by Matt Leacock has received great reviews and I’m very much looking forward to trying it out. In the meantime, here’s an unboxing, partial graphic design critique, and at the end, a tip to make the spectacular dice tower look even better!
