Maestro Media opens its crowdfunding, manufacturing, retail infrastructure to other publishers and designers

10. September 2026 um 13:34

Maestro Media is opening up the publishing, licensing, manufacturing and retail infrastructure behind its own games to outside designers and publishers, including companies looking for a North American publishing partner.

The Binding of Isaac: Four Souls and Clash of Clans: The Epic Raid publisher has launched Overture by Maestro Media, through which it plans to co-publish games from other companies, partner with them during development or production, or potentially acquire titles outright.

Maestro founder and CEO Javon Frazier said, “The hardest part of this industry has never been the ideas. It is everything after them. Getting your design in front of a publisher, funding the development, entering distribution, landing it on a shelf.

“We built a machine to do that for our own titles alongside some of the largest licensors in the world. Overture by Maestro Media opens that machine to everybody else.”

Maestro says Overture will allow other companies to use its existing operations for areas including development and licensing, production, manufacturing, crowdfunding, direct-to-consumer sales and retail distribution.

The company has already struck several deals along those lines, including announcing in the summer that it would publish a new North American edition of Zoch Verlag’s Ghost Blitz from January 2027.

It is also partnering with Nighthawk Interactive on Richard Garfield and Ken Jennings’ trivia game Half Truth: Second Guess, and working with Brazilian tabletop publisher D20 Culture to co-publish The Lord of the Rings: Foes of Middle-Earth and the Justice League Unlimited RPG worldwide and in multiple languages.

Frazier said of the Ghost Blitz deal ahead of unveiling the game at this year’s Gen Con, “Ghost Blitz has sold more than one million copies in 20-plus languages over 15 years. Most North American families have never seen it on a shelf. That’s not a demand problem. It’s a distribution problem.

“That’s the gap we built Maestro Media to close. Crowdfunding, direct-to-consumer, and retail working as one engine, with distribution partners already in place across North America.”

Peterson Rodrigues, CEO of D20 Culture, said, “We’re excited to work with Maestro because we see the same opportunity they do: great games shouldn’t be limited by borders.

“Bringing these titles to players around the world, in their own languages and through partners who understand their markets, is exactly the kind of collaboration we want to be part of.”

Game designers will get their first opportunity to pitch original tabletop games via the new operation through a month-long submission window running from January 1 to 30 next year.

Maestro made its name in tabletop through its 2018 Kickstarter for The Binding of Isaac: Four Souls, which raised more than $2.6m, followed three years later by a further $6.7m for its Requiem expansion.

The company says it has worked with more than 40 licensed properties to date, and shipped more than 400,000 products, while Frazier has raised more than $16m across 16 crowdfunding campaigns – although almost 60% of that total comprises the two Binding of Isaac projects.

Maestro has expanded its distribution network significantly in recent years, signing an exclusive deal with Asmodee last year covering its English-language products in the US, UAE and South Africa, followed by an agreement making Zatu Games its exclusive distributor in the UK and Ireland.

The company added that Ryan Lumax has been promoted to vice president and head of games at the company, having joined last year after almost eight years at Canadian distributor Lion Rampant Imports.

Lion Rampant was acquired by Asmodee in 2019, when Lumax was working as head purchaser. He became a purchasing manager at the business in 2023.

Lumax said, “I spent eight years on the buying side, and the games that didn’t make it were almost never the bad ones.

“They were good games whose creators ran out of road somewhere between the prototype and the pallet. That is the gap Overture by Maestro Media closes.”

Ted Lasso — Strong first season; it’s easy to see why it was so hyped. Later seasons are a mixed bag (likely cause — expanding from 10 30-minute episodes to 12 45-ish minute episodes). Part of why this worked is that there is almost nothing “cringe” in the first season … but it started creeping into S2 and S3. (Because of Ted Lasso I subscribed to AppleTV, at least for a bit, and so I’m trying various shows on that to see).

Zodiac — Workmanlike movie that is captures that slice of time. Excellent cast (not just top billing, but full of “Oh, that guy” character actors). At 2:40 it didn’t feel long.

Maybe

The Amateur — A touch too long & by the book, but … competently done. In most thrillers, you can almost alwasy ‘guess the secret surprise bad guy’ by the actor they cast. I appreciated that announced it right away and didn’t leave it as a “twist.”

How to Stay Smart in a Smart World (Book by Gerd Gigerenzer) –I really liked “Risk Savvy,” (his book on decision making) and it actually changed some of my decisions, so this book (on dealing with advances in AI) was an auto-read. I think most of my readers will already know quite a bit in here, but it’s well done. Gigerenzer is … not an AI skeptic, but perhaps a skeptical realist. At 4 years old this book is already dated, but worth skimming.

Schmigadoon — Assuming you like musicals, pretty good. (Modern couple gets isekai’d into a musical world, stuck until they find true love). It helps that each season is super-short, and there were only two seasons (although I would have liked to see the 3rd season, which would have dealt with 80s musicals like Into the Woods, Phantom of the Opera, etc)

Slow Horses — The first season did some rare things; also a fair number of cliches. Later seasons … basically are all “the same things repeated,” within the different “mystery of the season” plot. That being said, the seasons are short enough.

The Universal Baseball Association, Inc. J. Henry Waugh, Prop (Book by Robert Coover) — I tried this after mentioning it (again) in the 20th Century Project on APBA Baseball (etc). It was fine …. definitely a book of a past time, and I could see the dark comedy, etc. But after three weeks I was only through 1/3rd of it and I punted and just read the summary on Wikipedia. Despite not finishing it personally, I thought it was pretty good.

Maybe Not

The Accountant 2 — The first Accountant wasn’t bad … kind of guilty pleasure OK. This was bad. To make matters worse, the crime has basically no financial element (it’s gotten out of the way in a 1 minute dialog) and it’s just a standard action flick except that a) Ben Affleck has no charm (which is played for laughs), b) the center for neuro-divergent children is basically the Bat Cave that can solve any problem. I do like Jon Bernthal, and he’s OK-ish.

Reacher Season 4 — I mean, I’m watching it …. but quality has dropped noticeable. It’s not like it was realistic before, but there weren’t fully-automatic gun battle/car chases mid-season (or falling through broken glass 20-30 feet and then instantly running away). I might actually watch the spinoff, which will likely have to go smaller instead of bigger.

Young Sherlock (Amazon Prime) — A flashy series by Guy Ritchie, but it is not Sherlock Homes (or even Sherlock, which had a fidelity1 this lacks despite the modern setting). Not bad, but … if you don’t want to make a Sherlock Holmes show, don’t include the name.

Nope

Murderbot — From the one episode I watched, the writing made Twilight look like Shakespeare.

  1. At least in the first few episodes. ↩︎

Nothing

Maybe

Chimpanzee Politics: Power and Sex Among Apes — Fascinating book covering what the title says.

A History of Japan by Kenneth Henshall — I think intro history books should be short-ish, not showstoppers, and this fits. Worth reading if you have an interest.

The ‘Sharpe’ series (BBC) — This is ~2 movies a year for several years, starring Sean Bean in the mid-90s. Never read the books, but they are supposed to be good. Only seen a few but planning on watching the rest (on Tubi). Also has some “before they were famous” cameos…. In general these are fine, although at least once I watched it, turned it off then hours later went “Wait, the big reveal makes no sense when ….”

Star Trek: First Contact — Watched this again to get the taste of ST:Insurrection out of my mouth. I kind of want to re-watch TNG and/or DS9. I mean, not enough to spring for Paramount ….

Maybe Not

Passengers — Passable. Meh. An interesting premise that gives way to big space explosions. (Arguably that’s the way of most modern SF movies).

Nope

Star Trek: Insurrection — I’d never seen this. Man was it bad. Maybe not Nemesis bad, but bad. Actually, maybe Nemesis bad.

Japanese media

Mice Times Japan just published an article about the Asian Board Games Festival in the Philippines, which happened earlier this month. I was a little shocked to find my face on the cover photo. I was just one of many exhibitors interviewed. I am guessing they picked this photo because of the chilli on my head. I'm happy the Malaysian title, Jon's King and Peasant, is featured in the photo too.&

interviewed: Monkey Plays (Philippines)

I was interviewed by Dan of Monkey Plays at the Asian Board Games Festival in Manila. The full video (mostly English, some Tagalog) was her experience at the fair, and other designers were interviewed too. The video also shows Pinocchio being played. Link: https://youtu.be/WJ1WzEpplpw?si=VShCuwwhvFwZk8VH&t=667

Lying about Money (Book by Dan Davies) — This book on financial fraud is great (assuming you want to read about that). Found this from an article on “Bits about Money.” It’s more about institutional aspects than con men (although con men make plenty of appearances). Here’s a “Today I learned” style tidbit/quote.

As far back as the early 2000s, the left-wing economist Doug Henwood coined a monetary policy rule that “any time Donald Trump is able to borrow money or build anything, interest rates are probably too low.” (in ‘Ch 3: The Long Firm1‘, p 65 in the hard back)

Men without Women — This collection of Hiraki Murakami’s short stories caught my eye at the library, so I decided to try it, as he is one of the most famous novelists in the world. Excellent. After that I started another collection of short stories (“First Person Singular“) and also like what I’ve read. I am less enamored of 1Q84, which is a doorstopper I couldn’t get into.

Sicario — Well done movie about an ugly subject. Nice cinematography. Dennis Villeneuve directs.

Maybe

Ad Astra — “Direct to Streaming Inception” visually quite nice (I thought the Mars indoors cinematography particularly good), some interesting scenes; but deeply, deeply stupid about space. They did at least get the Earth-Neptune distance correct (looking at you, Prometheus).

Bohemian Rhapsody — Didn’t do anything groundbreaking … understood the assignment.

Last One Laughing (Amazon) — Funny but awkward show. 10 (UK) Comedians tasked to spend 6 hours together and make each other laugh, but since they are all trying not to laugh, it’s cringe and makes it hard (for me) to enjoy. But there seems to be on exceptionally funny moment every 30 minute episode, often from the bizarre mind of Sam Campbell.

Project Hail Mary — The first time I’ve seen a theater mostly full. Even Dune (1 and 2) weren’t as crowded. Didn’t see this opening weekend because tickets were all sold out at 11am. That being said, this movie is the epitome of “did the thing” or “understood the assignment” more than “excellent movie.” It’s just that the bar has been so low for so long that everyone is praising it to the heavens. This is like Independence Day in the 90s, a great popcorn flick. To be fair, this is the best of all the maybes. (And, a few weeks after I wrote this, I think I might have been too harsh).

Weapons — I liked this horror movie for the vibe and feeling, but honestly this felt like a good idea for a X-files episode stretched out to two hours (minus Mulder and Scully). And the reveal is not nearly as interesting as the setup (a typical problem in Horror). If you’d let Vince Gilligan punch up this script (back in the 90s), he’d have made this a Top 10 episode, probably by not trying to explain anything.

Maybe Not

Born a Champion — An explicitly right-wing sports/fighting movie (Brazilian Ju-Jitsu). What’s weirder is that the main character is explicitly the favorite (overdog?) in every fight and the only issues are his age, injuries, and morals (in a sometimes immoral sport). I liked it, but its an odd movie.

War Machine (Netflix) — A “Direct to Streaming” Predator knockoff that I assume had significant DoD funding/help (like Top Gun did) due to the pro-US Army Ranger slant. It doesn’t understand what made Predator such a big hit (and also … its 40 years later, we’ve seen it before) so not great, but an OK popcorn flick. Checks the required boxes. A few of the touches are nice. Alan Ritchson is going full Reacher, but that works for something like this.

Nope

Sunshine — This 2007 movies cast was mostly unknown (or has been) in 2007. In 2026 it’s a murderer’s row of well know names. Cillian Murphy, Chris Evans, Michelle Yeoh, Benedict Wong, Rose Byrne … but it’s a terrible, deeply stupid movie.

  1. Bonus Quote — “Etymologically, a ‘long firm’ has little to do with either length or firms. It first appears in printed English in dictionaries of slang and thieves’ cant, and both words are used in archaic senses. “Long” has a meaning from the Anglo-Saxon gelang meaning “fraudulent” and referring to fault or failure, while “firm” (like the Italian firma) referred to a signature …. so a “long firm” is a “gelang firma,” one Saxon word and one Latin, and refers to the crime of signing a fraudulent bill of goods. And if you understand the long firm, you arguably understand a lot more than most professional economists about the way that business is really done.” p28 ↩︎

Prospero Hall is back. I’m sorry, that’s a lie. 2001: A Space Odyssey the Board Game is not a Prospero Hall title. It’s a Phil Walker-Harding design courtesy of Maestro Media. This fits right alongside quirky board game cuts like The Warriors, Fast & the Furious: Highway Heist, and Rear Window. I almost don’t trust…

A wonderful serenity has taken possession of my entire soul, like these sweet mornings of spring which I enjoy with my whole heart. I am alone, and feel the charm of existence in this spot, which was created for the bliss of souls like mine. I am so happy, my dear friend, so absorbed in the exquisite sense of mere tranquil existence, that I neglect my talents. I should be incapable of drawing a single stroke at the present moment; and yet I feel that I never was a greater artist than now.

When, while the lovely valley teems with vapour around me, and the meridian sun strikes the upper surface of the impenetrable foliage of my trees, and but a few stray gleams steal into the inner sanctuary, I throw myself down among the tall grass by the trickling stream; and, as I lie close to the earth, a thousand unknown plants are noticed by me: when I hear the buzz of the little world among the stalks, and grow familiar with the countless indescribable forms of the insects and flies, then I feel the presence of the Almighty, who formed us in his own image, and the breath of that universal love which bears and sustains us, as it floats around us in an eternity of bliss; and then, my friend, when darkness overspreads my eyes, and heaven and earth seem to dwell in my soul and absorb its power, like the form of a beloved mistress, then I often think with longing, Oh, would I could describe these conceptions, could impress upon paper all that is living so full and warm within me, that it might be the mirror of my soul, as my soul is the mirror of the infinite God!

I should be incapable of drawing a single stroke at the present moment; and yet I feel that I never was a greater artist than now.

O my friend — but it is too much for my strength — I sink under the weight of the splendour of these visions! A wonderful serenity has taken possession of my entire soul, like these sweet mornings of spring which I enjoy with my whole heart.
