Add floors to your towers, finish them off with roofs, then add them onto the board for area-majority goodness. Wait, build the tower and THEN choose where it goes? Oh, never mind the odd order; we can keep tabs on each other's work-in-progress and try to plan around where we might compete. Escalating points, and brutal scoring in which only the top two score (and sometimes not even that), make for a four-player game with the tension ratcheted up to 11.

Alan Moon's and Aaron Weissblum's Capitol (Schmidt 2001) was once a Top 150 board game that didn't have an English edition — until Skyline 3000 (Z-Man 2009), which sadly exited the hobby zeitgeist almost as soon as it entered. It's games like this that are the reason I created this channel — to help people remember what great games these were.

But will it fit all types of games, like our beloved FFG titles such as Cosmic Encounter or Dune Imperium? How does this compare to the previous Boxthrone, which we previously touted as a nice replacement for Ikea Kallax? Is this worth the cost of spending a bit more, and is the assembly worth it?

We review one of the most famous and influential board games of all time, with the Fantasy Flight Games reprint! Cosmic Encounter is a political sci-fi party game with tons of asymmetric variable alien powers and take-that. With shifting alliances and lots of hand management, games are rightfully swingy and memorable. There’s prisoner’s dilemmas abound with interrupts on other player’s turns! This negotiation game really isn’t for everyone, and as stated the game negates a lot of modern design (unintentionally). Is it worth buying in the kickstarter fueled landscape of 2025? Or should you return to a more normal area control of less fiddly party game?

In this video, I review Saltfjord, a medium-heavy Euro from Aporta Games where you’re running a Norwegian fishing village in the late 19th century. You’ll be drafting dice to fire off powerful row/column actions on your player board, upgrading resources, completing crate orders, investing in technology tracks, and pushing your fishing boat deeper into the fjord for big points.

I’ll walk through how Saltfjord plays, what the dice-driven grid system feels like at the table. I’ll also talk about complexity, who this game is best for, and the kinds of cognitive skills it can help players practice.
