Justin Gary, designer of Ascension, talks about his personal process for designing and publishing games.
Justin has designed and released a ton of hit games over the years and worked in lots of different segments of the gaming industry, so he has a ton of great tips and advice.
Kickstarter alert! Dr. Eugene Marshall has launched a new project, now live on Kickstarter, called S5E. This is an superhero-centric RPG with vivid comic book-style art and rules that integrate directly with Dungeons and Dragons, Fifth Edition. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sigil/s5e-superheroic-roleplaying-for-5th-edition

Jason is causing some more Good Trouble! This time, he is joined by Dr. Eugene Marshall from Arcanist Press. He wrote the supplement "Ancestry and Culture: An Alternative to Race in 5e," which reimagines how fantasy games present the idea of "race." In essence, Dr. Marshall reimagines the idea of race, breaking it apart into biological, heritable traits (ancestry) and culturally learned traits(culture). Your Orc still has tusks, your Tiefling still has darkvision, and your Savvas is still a giant, sentient rock. This approach simply severs biology from traits that are learned, which opens up space for individuals from different ancestries to be... well, different! This is a direct critique and answer to the idea that all non-human fantasy races, everywhere, act and behave the same (i.e. all Orcs are stupid and barbaric, all Vermlings are garbage-eating savages, etc.). Dr. Marshall helps Jason analyze this core idea and also answer common counter-arguments.

The Secret Cabal Gaming Podcast's 2021 Fundraiser currently running on Kickstarter is in its final week! The campaign ends on Friday, June 25th at 5pm ET. If you would like to support our 100 hours of yearly podcast content and other additional event programs and videos, please considering donating to the Cabal and getting some awesome rewards to boot. You can find us on Kickstarter at: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/secretcabaljamie/the-secret-cabal-gaming-podcast-2021-10th-year-extravaganza. In episode 74 Tony, Don and Jamie pull out our armchair psychologist cards and talk about the psychology of a gaming junkie and what tricks and tactics marketers use to suck us in and part with our money.
As far as Walker is concerned, when he says that Mark is a jerk and he smells funny, that's a prime example of a combo. Mark counters that a perfectly sensible combo is a podcast about board games issuing random observations of silly blockbuster movies. In either case, if you want your mind to break and your conception of reality to weaken, we encourage you to investigate short scale vs. long scale. Numbers are meaningless and all is illusion. Another combo!

Episode 114 - Le Havre, Juicy Fruits, Mini Express
On this episode Steve and Def are joined by our very own Internet sensation - Mike, fresh from some online gaming sessions this week with Lincoln and Nikki from Game Night! and then Stella from Meeple University. (links below)
In our Sizzling Games segment Steve has been continuing his love affair with Uwe Rosenberg in Le Havre, Mike introduces us to the islands of Juicy Fruits (and introduces us to mangosteens, which I still swear is a made-up word!), and Def relives his childhood dreams of being a train conductor by playing Mini Express.
The Topic of the Pod is our most anticipated games: based on Kickstarters, expansions, retail releases, and rumours. Leave a comment on our socials if we didn't mention the game that you are most looking forward to!
In the Board Game Bracket 2.0 we settle last week's match-up: Cartographers vs Res Arcana, before we launch the next battle: Wingspan vs Archaeology.
We quickly check the mailbag for a quick Roast - the team share their favourite 2-player games and 4-player games, Def discloses his gaming priorities when moving house, and we laugh at the longest games the crew have ever played.
Finally in Swear An Oath, Mike fulfilled his oath of attempting 5x games solo and had an absolute blast. Def swore to play Scythe against not one but FOUR automas, and remarkably he came second! And Steve enjoyed the delightful Remember Our Trip. New oaths include Tiny Epic Dinosaurs and Stone Age (Mike), an online game with Steve & Mike (Def), and another Uwe Rosenberg classic: Caverna (Steve).
Sizzling Games: Le Havre (04:50), Juicy Fruits (18:20), Mini Express (27:55)
Topic of the Pod: Most Anticipated Games (39:27)

In this hungrily 144th episode of the Shut Up & Sit Down podcast, Quinns, Tom and Ava are locked in a room together! A week long gathering of your verifiably rowdy hosts kicked off with three cracking reprints of lovely older games, and then we all did a podcast about them!
We start with Big Daddy Kniz’s Royal Visit, move to Cornwall for Martin Wallace’s Tinner’s Trail before jumping across the pond for a steamboat race in Mississippi Queen!
Due to a live record, some of the trips and erms have been impossible to excise, so expect a slightly more chaotic pod than usual. We were very excited to be playing games together.

Ambie and Crystal discuss a couple games they've played recently, including Bilder, Cold Case: A Pinch of Murder, Cold Case: A Story to Die For, and Let's Make a Bus Route: The Dice Game. We then talk about some of our favorite games we've played together over the years.
Because making board games is hard, it's not enough just to have some solid mechanics - the best games have a production that coheres with the design. We look at some examples of games where production considerations (or lack thereof) have helped or hurt how they play. Before we executively produce, we talk about The King is Dead: Second Edition, Equinox, and Enchanted Plumes.

Titles, as Herr Doktor Doktor Vincent Diesel, esq. O.B.E. could tell you, are important things. They must be recorded for posterity, quite literally in the case of Dogberry: "But masters, remember that I am an ass, though it be not written down, yet forget not that I am an ass." Mark and Walker are bereft of such honorifics; "Gilded Ones" apparently only applies if you go the full gilt route, which sounds way too painful to endorse. Whether philosophers get any titles past "lovers of wisdom" is a matter of some controversy; Mark weighs in all the same.
