Joraku — How to Play 🎲 and Is It a Gem? 💎

March to Kyoto! That's what "Joraku" means, and in this game of the same name (Iori Tsukinami & Moaideas), players will gradually move their samurai west to the capital. Eastern regions score more early but nothing later, so over the course of three rounds, players will try to close in on the western-most, highest-scoring region.

I love peanut-butter-and-chocolate board games. "You got trick-taking in my area-majority game!" "Well, YOU got area majority in my trick-taker!" There've been other attempts at this combination — Brian Boru is another that comes to mind — but I prefer Joraku for its simplicity, and in particular this Tasty Minstrel English edition for its size.

I continue my run through board games I've covered in old videos, attaching my ratings to each of them. But my rating system might be unique, I'm not sure. Most people would rate a game based on how good they think it is; BoardGameGeek's system is based on how much you want to play it. Me, I rate games based on how much I want to keep them in my collection.

(no stars) — I definitely don't want to keep this game and will actively try to get rid of it, and quickly.
⭐ — I can tell it's not for me and don't want to keep it, so I will actively try to trade or sell it. I probably wouldn't re-acquire it.
⭐⭐ — I like the game fine and don't mind to own it. I may or may not trade or sell it, for fair value, and if I do, I might or might not re-acquire it someday.
⭐⭐⭐ — I like this game quite a bit and would like to keep it. I wouldn't actively try to get rid of it, but would consider a generous offer to trade or sell it.

Wizard & Skull King — Are They Gems? 💎

So busy, so busy. I'll have to put off my next "how to play, etc" video, and instead take the opportunity to chat about my two favourite trick-taking games.

Oh Hell — which I actually have never played! — is an exact-bid trick-taker using a standard French-suited deck of cards. These two games add special cards to this excellent formula:
— Wizard adds special cards that (basically) guarantee to win or lose a trick
— Skull King adds more special cards, including ones that score points for catching other cards in the trick, and tweaks other things like making bids simultaneous for maximum casualness and chaos!

Both are classic, both are great.
(Hmm, seems I gave away the ending there.)

Line goes up! In Speculation from Dirk Henn & Queen Games, stocks in eight companies will rise and fall relative to each other. Players are poor traders with limited starting capital, trying to make their fortunes by buying low, selling high, rinsing and repeating.

The original self-published game from 1992 used dice to determine how far stocks rise and what actions players can do. In this 2013 re-edition, the die faces are moved onto tokens pulled from a bag. Dice are bad, or so I'm told, but the bags aren't an improvement. Find a way to use dice instead for an easy, breezy stock market experience.

In this Very Special Episode of Board Gems, I read aloud the short story of The Bottle Imp, written by Robert Louis Stevenson and adapted into a card game by Günter Cornett.

My pronunciations are not always great, as I am not familiar with the Hawaiian language. For example I noticed the way I say "Haole" drifted over the course of the reading. Apologies!

I hope this is enjoyable for some people, if for no better purpose than as a sleeping aid.

Capitol / Skyline 3000 — How to Play 🎲 and Is It a Gem? 💎

Add floors to your towers, finish them off with roofs, then add them onto the board for area-majority goodness. Wait, build the tower and THEN choose where it goes? Oh, never mind the odd order; we can keep tabs on each other's work-in-progress and try to plan around where we might compete. Escalating points, and brutal scoring in which only the top two score (and sometimes not even that), make for a four-player game with the tension ratcheted up to 11.

Alan Moon's and Aaron Weissblum's Capitol (Schmidt 2001) was once a Top 150 board game that didn't have an English edition — until Skyline 3000 (Z-Man 2009), which sadly exited the hobby zeitgeist almost as soon as it entered. It's games like this that are the reason I created this channel — to help people remember what great games these were.

Settle the island of Crete or Sardinia, pick your poison. Players have a limited hand of cards to place or move pieces into scoring regions. But you don't get your cards back to play again until someone triggers scoring. You're scoring a fair bit now, so do you trigger scoring? That means you aren't placing/moving pieces, and other players will have a head-start in the next round. But at least you'll have some influence as to what regions will score in the future.

Kreta was a Stefan Dorra game from 2005 that never had a reprint or an English edition. However, there's a new, smaller, inexpensive edition from Playte called Sardegna that is almost a must-buy if you enjoy area-majority board games at all.

You know what they say: To make money, you have to spend money. Very true in this quick-playing Reiner Knizia auction card game. You're looking to get money — that's why it's money, after all — but you need to bid with money in hand to get the money cards you want, possibly from other players' bids! Aim to get a lot of as few currencies as possible, and/or sets of matching cards, and some precious metals wouldn't hurt, either.

Money was originally published by Goldsieber in 1999, and had a second edition from Eagle-Gryphon in around 2008. And now, in 2025, Allplay has released a third edition in their small square box line.
