By listener request, Jason is continuing to branch out into the wider world of hobby gaming. Ken Pickering and Garett Kopczynski from Reverie Studios stop by the show to chat about an upcoming, super awesome Live Action Role Play (LARP) they are organizing called Saturnalia. This is based on an ancient cultural festival involving, among other things, vampires! Players will be walking around the streets of New Orleans for a weekend, getting into adventures and celebrating collaborative storytelling.
Ken and Garett share their experiences designing and executing this LARP. This conversation focuses on how to construct an experience for maximum collaborative fun. They discuss game mechanisms to foster trust and insure consent. They also have some thoughts about how to deal with "alpha players", which is something cooperative board gamers know quite well!
Tickets are still available to this amazing event - https://vampirelarp.com/the_saturnalia_event.html
Jason continues the conversation with Dr. Patrick Rael from Bowdoin College and the Ludica blog on BGG. We discuss the meaning of a historical game, what they are and what they are not, and how games get it wrong. In essence, history games should present counterfactuals. They should allow us to imagine and game out different ways that history could have gone. When a "history" game does not do that, it can fall in to the pit traps that I have identified on many other Good Trouble shows.

Jason Furie from Backerkit joins the show to share about an exciting new initiative in crowdfunding! We're used to Kickstarter being the main home for crowdfunded projects. Backerkit has been in the game for 10 years as a pledge manager and providing other services, so they are now making the leap to provide an alternative that emphasizes listening and a ground-up approach. Jason gets into building community, listening to creators, upcoming projects from Cephalophair Games, Greater Than Games, Restoration Games, and more!

Famed game designer Bruno Faidutti joins the show for a civil discussion about our different perspectives as gamers and game creators. We discuss the differences between American and European tastes and sensibilities, how things have changes over the years, and how different gamers get different messages when they engage with a game on the table. This was a wide ranging and interesting conversation between two people who don't see the world in quite the same way, but who were able to find some common ground. I hope this serves as a model for similar types of conversations in our hobby moving forward.

Jason welcomes Greg Loring-Albright back to the show after completing his PhD in game stuff! We lead off the show talking about his latest game from Leder Games, Ahoy! It will be available for pre-order at the Leder Games website soon - www.ledergames.com.
We then get into Greg's thesis about tabletop games and digital adaptations. Greg found many gamers have found ways for them to coexist, so his discusses his experiences and research there. Finally, we discuss games as media, including the kinds of messages they can and cannot share with us.

(Jason here) It's a little peculiar, right? In no other hobby, or walk of life, do we say "the teach." But for board gamers, we know exactly what we mean - that necessary time before any new game that we need to spend in order to have our fun. I give a theory on why we say "the teach", drawing from my background in psychology and communication. I think it's great, and I fully support playing with language and coming up with new ways to say things.

Heads up, One Stop Coop Shop fans! This episode will cover an RPG Adventure book, rather than a board game. The reason we are running it here is for adventure and dungeon crawler fans - let's see new stuff! We can stick with elves, orcs, swords, and forests, or we can open our minds to new perspectives from new creators.
Ajit George is the creative lead for the new Adventure book for Dungeons and Dragons, Journey Through the Radiant Citadel. The book presents adventures for adults who want tough moral choices and creative depth in their games. It was written by an all-POC writing team with different takes on familiar adventuring. We discuss how it came about, what it hopes to accomplish, and addressing some of the cultural pushback.
