Episode 26: Kitchen Rush, Taverns of Tiefenthal, Werewolf

23. August 2020 um 04:24

On this episode Steve, Sarah and Jules welcome our new sponsor: Advent Games! Make sure you check out our FB Community page for your chance to win one of our Sizzling GAmes from this week! (more details below)

In our Sizzling Games, Sarah has been cooking up a storm in Kitchen Rush, Jules is serving the drinks in Taverns of Tiefenthal, and Steve is out there eating villagers in Werewolf

In our Topic of the Week we take stock of the games that 2020 has brought us so far. 0ur team share their favourite games and also the games that they are looking forward to most. What's you favourite game so far? What game are you most looking forward to? Share your thought on our socials; Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Discord.

In our Board Game Bracket we announce the winner from the 7 Wonders v Zombicide battle, and it was a landslide win - but to which game?? We also line up our next battle: Seasons vs 7th Continent. Make sure you vote for your favourite game to make sure it goes through the next round.

Finally, in Swear An Oath Steve rolls out the same excuses as always and didn't fulfill his oath from the last episode. Unsurprisingly Jules completely let him off the hook because he didn't fulfill one of his oaths either. Luckily we have Sarah to uphold the integrity of the podcast. So while Steve didn't play Vinhos and Jules didn't play Portal, they both double-down on their oaths and swear to play The Crew and Brass: Birmingham. Meanwhile Sarah, fresh from her back-to-back games of Betrayal at Calth swears an oath to pronounce, I mean play, Teotihuacan: City of Gods.

Episode 21 - Smartphone Inc, Blood Rage, Specter Ops

07. August 2020 um 05:47

This week Steve shares his recent experience of playing Smartphone Inc and he had a blast discovering new technology and engaging in patent-wars in the economic simulation Eurogame.

Jules dons his evil-Jules cloak and twirls his moustache as he reveals that he loves nothing more than crushing his opponents' Viking armies on Blood Rage.

Mitch details his nail-biting finishes in the one-vs-many hidden movement game Specter Ops.

A popular measure in the board gaming community is the complexity of a game, which is often described as 'heavy' or 'light'. But does 'heavy' mean difficult? In the Topic of the week, the team discuss the weight of games, their favourite heavy games, and how to overcome the perceived entry barrier.

In our Board Game Bracket segment, we wrap-up some previous match-ups: Spyfall vs It's A Wonderful World, Arkham Horror 3rd Ed vs Mysterium, and Arkham Horror LCG vs Inis. And then we unleash our latest battle - Fleet: The Dice Game vs Champions of Midgard. It's Steve vs Mitch in this battle of Viking clans defending a town against an onslaught of trolls, vs ... well, fishing. Yeah, so there's that. (Let's be honest, when even the recording equipment falls asleep during your pitch, you know you're in trouble, Mitch!)

In our Swear and Oath segment, Jules fulfilled his oath by playing Lords of Scotland and raises the bar with The Estates. Mitch failed to play Circle the Wagons, but successfully manage to plug Vyper Hyper playmats about 5 times in the space of a minute. He then doubles down with the sci-fi epic Anachrony. And Steve found Arkham Horror: The LCG very Conor-ish (which could be a compliment or not), and vows to play Xia: Legends of a Drift System before the debt collectors come knocking on his door.

Sizzling Games: Smartphone Inc (2:18), Blood Rage (14:33), Specter Ops (22:45)

Topic of the Week: What is a Heavy Game? (32:54)

Episode 20: Gaia Project, Zombie Kidz Evolution, Wavelength, BtB: Oliver Millin

03. August 2020 um 21:00

On this episode of the Board Game BBQ, Sarah is joined by Def and Dan to talk about heavy games, light games, and everything in between. In our Sizzling Games, Def wows us with the epic Gaia Project, Dan (and his son) battle the undead in Zombie Kidz Evolution, and Sarah has been trying to get everyone onto her wavelength in, er... Wavelength.

We also introduce a new segment: Beyond the Board, an interview series where we speak to interesting people in the board gaming community. This week we spoke with Oliver Millan, a Melbourne board game designer who has been working on his pet project, Matchbox Empires, for over two years. We discuss his inspiration for the game, and learn about its mechanics, but also enjoy a greater discussion about prototypes and playtesting.

We reveal the winner of the most recent Board Game Bracket: Aeons End Legacy vs Azul, before announcing the next match-up: Through The Ages vs Dead of Winter. It's Dan vs Def in this one and only one game can be victorious. Make sure your favourite goes through to the next round by casting your vote on all of our socials.

There's not a lot of Kickstarter action between the team this week, so instead Def breaks down the heavily-backed Nemesis for us. Meanwhile, Dan has backed the fun-sounding Roll Camera!: The Filmmaking Board Game.

Swear An Oath is such an important segment - it's when out team stand before each other and our listeners and vow to honor the Board Game Gods by playing a game from our #shelfofshame. Which is why it is so disappointing when one of our own fails to respect the code and fulfill their oath. Okay, that was a bit heavy-handed - basically Sarah didn't have time to play Race For the Galaxy: Alien Artifacts this week. But she does make amends by doubling-down on her oath and adding Papayoo to the list. Meanwhile Dan played both Stuffed Fables and Fox In The Forest Duet, and Def played Tzolk'in. The lads then add Back In Time (Dan) and Viticulture (Def) to their oaths.

You can find more info about Oliver's game Matchbox Empires, and support him on his journey to fulfilling his dream, by visiting his on his Instagram https://www.instagram.com/matchboxempires/ or on his website https://www.boardcitizen.com/

Episode 19: Machi Koro Legacy, Res Arcana, Terraforming Mars

29. Juli 2020 um 21:00

It's an Arkham Horror love-fest when Conor and Adrian join the show! The team hits the ground running with some important breaking news before launching into their Sizzling Games for the week. Conor and his partner have been working through Machi Koro Legacy, Adrian explores the card drafting mage-maker that it Res Arcana, and Steve falls in love all over again with Terraforming Mars.

Many of our listeners in Australia and overseas are still in isolation so the team discusses the pros and cons of playing boardgames online - specifically TableTop Simulator. How does it compare to Tabletop Arena, Tabletopia, or even dedicated gaming apps? With more virtual gaming conventions on the horizon, and even our regular online gaming on the BoardGame BBQ Discord, we discuss the easiest ways to overcome the entry barriers and get amongst the online gaming action.

The Board Game Bracket is going off! We resolve the match-up of Sheriff of Nottingham vs Great Western Trail, before Conor and Adrian go toe-to-toe in two separate battles: Spyfall vs It's A Wonderful World, and Arkham Horror (3rd Edition) vs Mysterium. And finally Adrian and Conor get to join forces to pump up Arkham Horror: The LCG, while poor Inis goes unsupported. Or does it?

In our Kickstarter segment Conor has backed Dead Reckoning and is eyeing off The Shivers and Perseverance. Meanhile, Adrian has backed the dice-drafting game Daimyo: Rebirth of the Empire.

We never thought it would happen, but Steve finally has a clean slate by fulfilling his oaths on Ecos: First Continent and Forgotten Waters. In fact, it's clean slates all 'round because Adrian brought Deep Madness back to the table (but found that his gaming tastes have changed since buying it), and Conor fulfilled his oath by playing SteamRollers (even if it was a few hours before he started recording). The team then swear fresh oaths by committing to Chronicles of Crime (Adrian), Euphoria: Build A Better Dystopia (Conor), and in a dramatic podcast-definig twist - Arkham Horror: LCG (Steve).

Episode 18: Everdell, The Crew, In The Hall Of The Mountain King

26. Juli 2020 um 21:00

Jules steps into the hosting role and after a minute we are already asking "Steve who?" He is joined by Sarah and Mike for another cracking episode in the world of boardgaming. In the Sizzling Games segment Mike fell in love with the amazing artwork and clever gameplay of Everdell, Sarah and her crew played the trick-taking co-op The Crew, and Jules became a ruthless troll In The Hall Of The Mountain King.

What is it about space that captures the imagination? The team discusses their favourite space-themed games this week and why the theme works so well in boardgaming. It seems that there are so many game styles, mechanics and even different franchises that can work in space. And of course, when evil-Jules beats you, no one can hear you scream...

We reveal the winner of the Aeon's End Legacy vs Azul, before Jules and Mike face off in the latest Board Game Bracket: Cosmic Encounter vs Gizmos. Cosmic Encounter might be incredibly clever, but apparently Gizmos has balls. Make sure you visit our social pages and vote for your favourite game to make sure it comes out on top!

In the Kickstarter segment Sarah is looking forward to receiving Rome & Roll next month. Perseverance has caught Jules' eye, but his heart is set on Windward which is expected to arrive next month as well. And Mike received his first-ever Kickstarter game; the wacky cure-all card game Trust Me I'm A Doctor.

Finally, in Swear An Oath Sarah fulfilled her oath by bringing Obscurio off the shelf, but found it really needed a traitor to make it more fun. Mike couldn't manage to get King Of Tokyo to the table due to the COVID lockdown so he played it online instead and came out victorious! And Jules just can't get enough of the Quacks of Quedlinburg successor: The Taverns of Tiefenthal. The gang then all swear new oaths: Race For The Galaxy: Alien Artifacts (Sarah), Tiny Epic Galaxies (Mike), and Lords of Scotland (Jules)

Episode 16: Special: The Board Game BBQ Trivia Night!

16. Juli 2020 um 21:00

Something a little different in this episode, as Adrian takes the lead and puts the BBQ through their paces with a Board Game Trivia battle.

Whose side are you on? Team Party or Team Solo?

In this epic battle, the formidable opponents show that they have filled their heads with far too much unimportant gaming stuff to actually keep any intelligence.

Episode 14: War Chest, Call To Adventure, Bob's Your Uncle

11. Juli 2020 um 07:35
For Sarah, it's all about strategy in the bag-building area control game War Chest.
For Dan, it's all about character in the story-driven game Call To Adventure.
For Steve, it's all about... his Uncle Bob? And lots of laughs!!
Our Sizzling Games this week are all very different, and all great fun!   How do you curate your collection? Do you have a 1-in-1-out policy like Steve? Do you hang onto games for when your kids are older? Do you buy games with a particular person in mind? All of these ideas and more are explored in our topic of the Week as the team chat about how they have come to amass their current collections, and provide advice to those listeners that are looking to build up a solid collection from scratch.   We have all been bitten by the Kickstarterbug again! Steve has backed Rallyman: Dirt and also Dead Reckoning. Sarah recaps our recent BGBBQ game of Blood on the Clocktower which she also helped kickstart last year, and Dan has put himself down for Catapult Kingdoms.   In our Boardgame Bracket we pit Azul against Aeon's End Legacy - two very different games with solid fanbases behind them. We also reveal the winners of our past two match-ups, Mage Knight vs A Feast for Odin, and Brass: Birmingham vs Incan Gold. Make sure you hit up our social and vote for your favourite to ensure they progress to the next round.   In Swear An Oath Steve, the AEG fan-boy, swears to play Ecos: First Continent, adding it to his yet-to-be-played Forgotten Waters.
Dan finally fulfilled Terraforming Mars but failed to put the paints down long enough to actually play Stuffed Fables. He then adds the co-op trick-taker Fox In The Forest Duet. Sarah had a blast playing Starfighter and vows to bring Obscurio to the table. (Beware of the traitor, Sarah!) And a special shout-out to friend of the show, Katia Howatson, who fulfilled her oath by playing Sorcerer.   Sizzling Games: War Chest (2:03), Call To Adventure (10:16), Bob's Your Uncle (18:48)

Episode 13: Clank!, Wingspan, Unfair

06. Juli 2020 um 21:00

Tonight Steve, Mike and Adrian catch up at the BBQ and bring some Sizzling Games along with them. Mike had a blast playing the deck-builder Clank! and is already hankering for the expansions. Steve finally brings the feathered fun of Wingspan to the podcast, and life's a rollercoaster for Adrian with Unfair.

In this week's Topic of the Week the team shares the favourite games of their partners and the stories behind them. The guys quizzed their partners about their favourite games and which games they enjoyed playing with each other, and there were some surprising answers for the team. What games do you enjoy playing with your partner? Drop us an email or jump on the discord to let us know.

The Board Game Bracket served up a big surprise this week (even Mike was surprised), and we still have a few days left for Brass: Birmingham vs Incan Gold. Meanwhile, in Maximum Apocalypse vs Dice Throne, Adrian and Steve go head to head. Adrian explains why the cooperative roguelike adventure of Maximum Apocalypse should de-throne Steve, and Steve returns serve with the accessibility and balance of Battle Yahtzee... errr..sorry, I mean Dice Throne.

Lastly, in the spirit of our Topic of The Week, all three guys being forced to honour new oaths chosen by their significant others. After carefully making his way Through The Ages, Mike's partner wants him to be the King Of Toyko next. Fresh from Exploding Kittens, Adrian agress to take the plunge into Deep Madness. And after rolling out every excuse in the book, Steve settles for the cooperative clues of Codenames Duet.

If you are making your own oaths to play games from your "Shelf of Shame", make sure you share your success with the hashtag #oathfulfilled on Instagram!

Episode 12: Aeon's End Legacy, Cartographers, Too Many Bones, Heroes of Air, Land and Sea

03. Juli 2020 um 07:09

In this episode we welcome Katia Howatson from Board Game Art Creations to the show. In our Kickstarter segment, Katia tells us how she came to create her amazing boardgame-inspired artwork that is currently on Kickstarter, how she got some of the industry's biggest publishers on board, and the challenge of using boardgame components to make the incredible mosaics. Her project was funded in only 48hrs, so it's all systems go! The campaign ends on July 15th so make sure you follow the link to secure one of these amazing calendars for yourself.

2021 Board Game Mosaic Calendar A high quality calendar comprising 13 works of art inspired by publishers such as Stonemaier, Roxley, Board & Dice and many more!  www.kickstarter.com

In our Sizzling Games segment, Sarah hits the ground running with her review of Aeon's End Legacy and Katia tells us about the map-making goblin-madness of Cartographers. Mitch finds that Too Many Bones is still never enough, and Steve shares his adventures in the table-sprawling Heroes of Air, Land and Sea.

Our Topic of the Week is Solo Games! Are you a solo gamer? Has the isolation of COVID19 restrictions turned you into a solo gamer? We explore the merits, and of course the fun, of solo gaming in the modern era. The team offer up some of their favourite solo games, as well as some great entry-level games if you are solo-curious.

In the Board Game Bracket we reveal the winners of the recent showdown: Lords of Waterdeep vs War of Whispers. Then Sarah and Mitch breakdown the next big battle: Mage Knight vs A Feast For Odin. Or, as they describe it; "getting a headache" vs "collecting junk". Make sure you hit up our socials to make sure your favourite gets through to the next round.

Finally in Swear an Oath, Steve clears the decks by fulfilling his oaths to play both Tiny Towns and K2. He then vows to bring the Plaid Hat game Forgotten Waters to the table this weekend. Sarah swears to blow the dust off Starfighter and finally get it to the table, while Mitch played Dreamscape to honour his oath before pledging to visit feudal Japan in Crossroads of Heroes. And Katia joins in the oath swearing by promising to play Sorcerer by White Wizard Games.

Episode 11: Tash Kalar, Smash Up, Super Fantasy Brawl, Teotihuacan: City of Gods

29. Juni 2020 um 21:00

The old adage goes: we always hurt the ones we love.

Sadly, our games are no exception. This week the team share with us the games that they truly love - but might not get to the table as much as they deserve. There are many reasons why gamers might not be able to get their favourite games to the table and so we explore some of those in this episode.

In our Sizzling Games segment we have a special treat for fans of the show - a review from our newest team member, Sarah from Tabletop Sauce. Sarah will join us in person on the next show, but in the meantime, we will have to make do with her review of Tash Kalar. Mike thoroughly enjoyed the "shufflebuilding" game Smash Up, Steve plays Super Fantasy Brawl during the recent Virtual Gaming Con, and Def raises a great question: how do you really pronounce Teotihuacan?

Speaking of differing opinions, we recap the closest Board Game Bracket match-up so far in Mansions of Madness versus Five Tribes, and also Oceans vs Root. Then Def soundly spanks Mike in their Dinosaur Island versus Pandemic Legacy debate. So don't let Mike's pleas for mercy be for nothing - make sure you vote for your favourite on our socials.

In Swear An Oath, Steve crossed Cartographers off his list with the help of the Board Game BBQ crew, while Tiny Towns gets a 24hr reprieve. Mike was pleasantly surprised by the strategic and slippery Counterfeiters, and Def met his oath by playing Brass: Birmingham several times just to be sure. Then new oaths were sworn for K2, Tzolk'in, and Through the Ages.

If you are making your own oaths to play games from your "Shelf of Shame", make sure you share your success with the hashtag #oathfulfilled on Instagram!

Episode 10: Potion Explosion, Silk, Scythe: The Rise of Fenris

25. Juni 2020 um 21:01

Thanks to all of our listeners for helping us reach 1000 downloads! With so many podcasts out there, we are so very grateful that you find the time to listen to ours. We plan to continue bringing you the games and topics that you want to hear so thank you for all of your support.

This week in our Sizzling Games segment Conor offers up Potion Explosion as a perfect game for young families and adults alike. Jules delves into the world of silkworms with the aptly titled Silk, and Steve just bangs on about Scythe some more... Except this time it's the magnificent expansion The Rise of Fenris, which leads perfectly into the Topic Of The Week: Expansions. The team discuss the pros and cons of expansions, what to look for in an expansion, and share a list of their favourite expansions on the market today.

Find out the winner from the last Board Game Bracket; Nemo's War vs 5 Minute Dungeon; before we set-up not one but two new battles: Oceans vs Root, and Lords of Waterdeep vs A War of Whispers. Jules and Conor come out swinging and take opposing views on these match-ups, so make sure you hit up our socials to get your favourite over the line.

In everyone's beloved segment, Swear An Oath, Jules fulfilled his oath by playing (and loving) Explorers of the North Sea and makes a new oath to take his newly created shelf of shame by playing Taverns of Tiefenthal. Conor enjoyed the nail-biting real-time strategy of Pandemic: Rapid Response, and makes a new oath to play the asymmetric game Skulk Hollow. And lastly, Steve finally got Kemet to the table and bloody loved every minute of it. In Photosynthesis he found that the intricacies of growing trees proves a challenge when playing with younger gamers, but found great delight in the nerdy wordy deck builder Paperback. And even though he still has time up his sleeve to play Cartographers, he also adds Tiny Towns to his oath.

Episode 9: Fugitive, Pandemic Legacy: Season 1, Orleans

22. Juni 2020 um 20:20

On this week's episode of the Board Game BBQ Steve, Adrian and Dan sink their teeth into Card Games. But these are not your parents' card games. You won't find Canasta or 500 here. How about writing a Love Letter to the Princess? Fancy yourself some Exploding Kittens? And who doesn't love a Sushi Go Party? We also pay lip service to Hanabi and The Mind for more card gaming goodness.

The Virtual Gaming Con is this week (June 24th-29th) and the Board Game BBQ is hosting live games across the Con. The team will be online for most of the con during Australian hours so you will be able to find a game or three to jump in on without having to wait until the US or Europe comes online. Search for "Board Game BBQ" and you'll find us all in the game schedule.

Our Sizzling Games this week are Fugitive, Pandemic Legacy: Season 1, and Orleans: and you couldn't get three more different games in a single segment if you tried. Our followers on FaceBook and Instagram have decided another winner in the Board Game Bracket, and this week's match-up is another great battle: Five Tribes vs Mansion of Madness. Adrian and Dan plead their cases for the better game before we throw it over to our listeners to choose.

Swear An Oath this week takes a turn as not one, but two of our hosts fail to fulfill their Oaths. Dan and Steve both failed to complete Terraforming Mars, Kemet, and Photosynthesis, but Adrian gracefully lets them off the hook. Adrian tells of his late-night addiction to Decrypto and then goes about setting Exploding Kittens as his next Oath. Dan adds Stuffed Fables to his list, while Steve doubles down on his oath by adding Cartographers and Paperback.

Episode 8: Welcome to Dino World, Santa Monica, Above and Below

17. Juni 2020 um 23:52

Steve, Mike and Mitch have news! Big News!

News so big it needs its own segment, which we have decided to call: The News.

Our humble podcast has been asked to take part in the upcoming BGG Virtual Con (June 24-28). The team at the Board Game BBQ will be hosting and playing virtual games over the course of the Virtual Con - bringing the international convention into the Australian Timezones!! We are truly flattered to be asked to participate and we look forward to meeting many of you online. (more details below)

The Sizzling Games this week includes roll 'n' write raptors in Welcome to Dino World, the card-drafting beachfronts of Santa Monica, and the compelling storylines of Above and Below.

The Topic of the Week is how to get new people into this addictive hobby. How to introduce people into board games, how to encourage new players to 'buy in' to gaming, and how to craft the ultimate Games Night at your place.

As always, everyone has their eye on Kickstarter, with the team torn between Nemesis and Terraforming Mars Big Box, before Mitch and Mike come our swinging representing their faves for the next round of the Board Game Bracket: Nemo's War vs 5 Minute Dungeon. Both pitch compelling arguments while Steve gets splinters from sitting on the fence.

Finally, in Swear An Oath, Mike has proudly fulfilled his first oath, Dungeon Petz, and is backing it up with Counterfeiters. Mitch put Maiden's Quest to rest and is really glad that he did (cue historic moment @1:25:03 ), and has decided to take a more surreal approach with Dreamscape. And Steve continues his Kemet-less run, but does manage to complete Space Base, and adds the beauty of Photosynthesis to his oath backlog.

Episode 7: Everdell, Imperial Settlers: Empires of the North, Clans of Caledonia

15. Juni 2020 um 00:04

This week Steve, Def and Conor bring some bigger games to the BBQ - Everdell, Imperial Settlers: Empires of the North, and Clans of Caledonia. But does bigger mean better? Does a premium price mean a prized possession? Funny you should ask because that's the Topic of the Week: what makes a game valuable? The guys take a deep dive into the games that bring the most value for them.

Steve reveals the winner of the latest match-up on the Board Game Bracket - Dixit vs Bang: The Dice Game - before wrapping up with everyone's favourite segment: Swear An Oath. Def made amends for his failed oaths by playing both Cartographers and Glenmore II: Chronicles, Conor fudged his way through Tapestry by riding on the coat-tails of his sister, and Steve plays the sympathy card for leaving Kemet on the shelf. New oaths this week are Brass: Birmingham, Pandemic: Rapid Response, Space Base.
