Episode 12: Aeon's End Legacy, Cartographers, Too Many Bones, Heroes of Air, Land and Sea

03. Juli 2020 um 07:09

In this episode we welcome Katia Howatson from Board Game Art Creations to the show. In our Kickstarter segment, Katia tells us how she came to create her amazing boardgame-inspired artwork that is currently on Kickstarter, how she got some of the industry's biggest publishers on board, and the challenge of using boardgame components to make the incredible mosaics. Her project was funded in only 48hrs, so it's all systems go! The campaign ends on July 15th so make sure you follow the link to secure one of these amazing calendars for yourself.

2021 Board Game Mosaic Calendar A high quality calendar comprising 13 works of art inspired by publishers such as Stonemaier, Roxley, Board & Dice and many more!  www.kickstarter.com

In our Sizzling Games segment, Sarah hits the ground running with her review of Aeon's End Legacy and Katia tells us about the map-making goblin-madness of Cartographers. Mitch finds that Too Many Bones is still never enough, and Steve shares his adventures in the table-sprawling Heroes of Air, Land and Sea.

Our Topic of the Week is Solo Games! Are you a solo gamer? Has the isolation of COVID19 restrictions turned you into a solo gamer? We explore the merits, and of course the fun, of solo gaming in the modern era. The team offer up some of their favourite solo games, as well as some great entry-level games if you are solo-curious.

In the Board Game Bracket we reveal the winners of the recent showdown: Lords of Waterdeep vs War of Whispers. Then Sarah and Mitch breakdown the next big battle: Mage Knight vs A Feast For Odin. Or, as they describe it; "getting a headache" vs "collecting junk". Make sure you hit up our socials to make sure your favourite gets through to the next round.

Finally in Swear an Oath, Steve clears the decks by fulfilling his oaths to play both Tiny Towns and K2. He then vows to bring the Plaid Hat game Forgotten Waters to the table this weekend. Sarah swears to blow the dust off Starfighter and finally get it to the table, while Mitch played Dreamscape to honour his oath before pledging to visit feudal Japan in Crossroads of Heroes. And Katia joins in the oath swearing by promising to play Sorcerer by White Wizard Games.

If you are making your own oaths to play games from your "Shelf of Shame", make sure you share your success with the hashtag #oathfulfilled on Instagram!

Episode 11: Tash Kalar, Smash Up, Super Fantasy Brawl, Teotihuacan: City of Gods

29. Juni 2020 um 21:00

The old adage goes: we always hurt the ones we love.

Sadly, our games are no exception. This week the team share with us the games that they truly love - but might not get to the table as much as they deserve. There are many reasons why gamers might not be able to get their favourite games to the table and so we explore some of those in this episode.

In our Sizzling Games segment we have a special treat for fans of the show - a review from our newest team member, Sarah from Tabletop Sauce. Sarah will join us in person on the next show, but in the meantime, we will have to make do with her review of Tash Kalar. Mike thoroughly enjoyed the "shufflebuilding" game Smash Up, Steve plays Super Fantasy Brawl during the recent Virtual Gaming Con, and Def raises a great question: how do you really pronounce Teotihuacan?

Speaking of differing opinions, we recap the closest Board Game Bracket match-up so far in Mansions of Madness versus Five Tribes, and also Oceans vs Root. Then Def soundly spanks Mike in their Dinosaur Island versus Pandemic Legacy debate. So don't let Mike's pleas for mercy be for nothing - make sure you vote for your favourite on our socials.

In Swear An Oath, Steve crossed Cartographers off his list with the help of the Board Game BBQ crew, while Tiny Towns gets a 24hr reprieve. Mike was pleasantly surprised by the strategic and slippery Counterfeiters, and Def met his oath by playing Brass: Birmingham several times just to be sure. Then new oaths were sworn for K2, Tzolk'in, and Through the Ages.

If you are making your own oaths to play games from your "Shelf of Shame", make sure you share your success with the hashtag #oathfulfilled on Instagram!

Episode 10: Potion Explosion, Silk, Scythe: The Rise of Fenris

25. Juni 2020 um 21:01

Thanks to all of our listeners for helping us reach 1000 downloads! With so many podcasts out there, we are so very grateful that you find the time to listen to ours. We plan to continue bringing you the games and topics that you want to hear so thank you for all of your support.

This week in our Sizzling Games segment Conor offers up Potion Explosion as a perfect game for young families and adults alike. Jules delves into the world of silkworms with the aptly titled Silk, and Steve just bangs on about Scythe some more... Except this time it's the magnificent expansion The Rise of Fenris, which leads perfectly into the Topic Of The Week: Expansions. The team discuss the pros and cons of expansions, what to look for in an expansion, and share a list of their favourite expansions on the market today.

Find out the winner from the last Board Game Bracket; Nemo's War vs 5 Minute Dungeon; before we set-up not one but two new battles: Oceans vs Root, and Lords of Waterdeep vs A War of Whispers. Jules and Conor come out swinging and take opposing views on these match-ups, so make sure you hit up our socials to get your favourite over the line.

In everyone's beloved segment, Swear An Oath, Jules fulfilled his oath by playing (and loving) Explorers of the North Sea and makes a new oath to take his newly created shelf of shame by playing Taverns of Tiefenthal. Conor enjoyed the nail-biting real-time strategy of Pandemic: Rapid Response, and makes a new oath to play the asymmetric game Skulk Hollow. And lastly, Steve finally got Kemet to the table and bloody loved every minute of it. In Photosynthesis he found that the intricacies of growing trees proves a challenge when playing with younger gamers, but found great delight in the nerdy wordy deck builder Paperback. And even though he still has time up his sleeve to play Cartographers, he also adds Tiny Towns to his oath.

Episode 9: Fugitive, Pandemic Legacy: Season 1, Orleans

22. Juni 2020 um 20:20

On this week's episode of the Board Game BBQ Steve, Adrian and Dan sink their teeth into Card Games. But these are not your parents' card games. You won't find Canasta or 500 here. How about writing a Love Letter to the Princess? Fancy yourself some Exploding Kittens? And who doesn't love a Sushi Go Party? We also pay lip service to Hanabi and The Mind for more card gaming goodness.

The Virtual Gaming Con is this week (June 24th-29th) and the Board Game BBQ is hosting live games across the Con. The team will be online for most of the con during Australian hours so you will be able to find a game or three to jump in on without having to wait until the US or Europe comes online. Search for "Board Game BBQ" and you'll find us all in the game schedule.

Our Sizzling Games this week are Fugitive, Pandemic Legacy: Season 1, and Orleans: and you couldn't get three more different games in a single segment if you tried. Our followers on FaceBook and Instagram have decided another winner in the Board Game Bracket, and this week's match-up is another great battle: Five Tribes vs Mansion of Madness. Adrian and Dan plead their cases for the better game before we throw it over to our listeners to choose.

Swear An Oath this week takes a turn as not one, but two of our hosts fail to fulfill their Oaths. Dan and Steve both failed to complete Terraforming Mars, Kemet, and Photosynthesis, but Adrian gracefully lets them off the hook. Adrian tells of his late-night addiction to Decrypto and then goes about setting Exploding Kittens as his next Oath. Dan adds Stuffed Fables to his list, while Steve doubles down on his oath by adding Cartographers and Paperback.

Episode 8: Welcome to Dino World, Santa Monica, Above and Below

17. Juni 2020 um 23:52

Steve, Mike and Mitch have news! Big News!

News so big it needs its own segment, which we have decided to call: The News.

Our humble podcast has been asked to take part in the upcoming BGG Virtual Con (June 24-28). The team at the Board Game BBQ will be hosting and playing virtual games over the course of the Virtual Con - bringing the international convention into the Australian Timezones!! We are truly flattered to be asked to participate and we look forward to meeting many of you online. (more details below)

The Sizzling Games this week includes roll 'n' write raptors in Welcome to Dino World, the card-drafting beachfronts of Santa Monica, and the compelling storylines of Above and Below.

The Topic of the Week is how to get new people into this addictive hobby. How to introduce people into board games, how to encourage new players to 'buy in' to gaming, and how to craft the ultimate Games Night at your place.

As always, everyone has their eye on Kickstarter, with the team torn between Nemesis and Terraforming Mars Big Box, before Mitch and Mike come our swinging representing their faves for the next round of the Board Game Bracket: Nemo's War vs 5 Minute Dungeon. Both pitch compelling arguments while Steve gets splinters from sitting on the fence.

Finally, in Swear An Oath, Mike has proudly fulfilled his first oath, Dungeon Petz, and is backing it up with Counterfeiters. Mitch put Maiden's Quest to rest and is really glad that he did (cue historic moment @1:25:03 ), and has decided to take a more surreal approach with Dreamscape. And Steve continues his Kemet-less run, but does manage to complete Space Base, and adds the beauty of Photosynthesis to his oath backlog.

Episode 7: Everdell, Imperial Settlers: Empires of the North, Clans of Caledonia

15. Juni 2020 um 00:04

This week Steve, Def and Conor bring some bigger games to the BBQ - Everdell, Imperial Settlers: Empires of the North, and Clans of Caledonia. But does bigger mean better? Does a premium price mean a prized possession? Funny you should ask because that's the Topic of the Week: what makes a game valuable? The guys take a deep dive into the games that bring the most value for them.

Steve reveals the winner of the latest match-up on the Board Game Bracket - Dixit vs Bang: The Dice Game - before wrapping up with everyone's favourite segment: Swear An Oath. Def made amends for his failed oaths by playing both Cartographers and Glenmore II: Chronicles, Conor fudged his way through Tapestry by riding on the coat-tails of his sister, and Steve plays the sympathy card for leaving Kemet on the shelf. New oaths this week are Brass: Birmingham, Pandemic: Rapid Response, Space Base.

Episode 6 - It's a Wonderful World, Inis, Just One

12. Juni 2020 um 01:21

This week Steve and Jules welcome Adrian to the podcast as the team recap the first Board Game Bracket showdown, and there is a lot to unpack from both sides of the contest. Who came out on top - Gloomhaven or Pandemic? And did that game win on both the BGBBQ contributors bracket and the popular vote?

There are some unique games sizzling this week (and Steve proves that even a broken watch can be correct twice a day), and the topic of the week is Social Deduction Games. The team explores what sets these games apart from regular party games, and why lying, cheating, backstabbing and deception are just so much fun!

In our regular Kickstarter segment, Adrian shares what he has backed recently, and everyone comes to the party in the ever-popular segment Swear An Oath. Jules fulfilled his backlog of oaths by playing both Photosynthesis and Quoridor, before swearing to replay Explorers of the North Sea (and upping the level of difficulty of the oath by increasing the player count to five). Steve brought Detective: City of Angels to the table with very little fanfare from his family, and has been inspired by Jules to play Kemet this week. Finally, Adrian swears his first oath by refining his code-breaking skills with Decrypto.

Topic of the Week: Social Deduction games (16:48)

03. Juni 2020 um 08:31

The gloves are off this week as the Boardgame Bracket kicks off with a massive match-up:

Gloomhaven vs Pandemic. Steve, Mitch, and Dan square off in defense of why one game is better than the other. They cover game mechanics, themes, replayability, components and, of course, fun!

The conversation gets fierce, but ultimately we need your help to decide a winner. Cast your vote on our Facebook, Instagram or Discord, and join in the conversation on which game should advance to the next round.

But first of all the boys discuss their Sizzling Games, before taking a deep dive into the topic of the week: Boardgame Bling - what is it, where can you get it, and is it worth it? And somehow they still find time to brag about fulfilling their oaths and set new ones. What a show!!

28. Mai 2020 um 23:44

This episode is choc-full of gaming goodness as Steve, Jules, Conor and Def discuss all things miniatures; what defines a miniature game, what is the appeal, what are some good gateway games to start with, and why bother painting them? Of course, there are always sizzling games to talk about, and everyone seems to have their eye on Kickstarter. Finally, in Swear an Oath, Steve delivers a double-header by conquering both Teotihuacan and Underwater Cities, Conor pleased the Oath Gods and the Dice Gods by finally playing Dice Forge, however pride cometh before a fall for Def the Cartographer. Also, Jules doubles down on his missed Photosynthesis oath by adding Quoridor. Not to be outdone, Steve and Conor back-up their success with Minecraft: Builders and Biomes, and Tapestry respectively.
