The Problem With Every Co-op Game

02. September 2026 um 16:30

💾

Cooperative board games put everyone on the same team — but almost every one of them runs into the same design flaw: the quarterback problem. One player, usually the most confident or most experienced, ends up making every decision for the whole table while everyone else just follows along.

This video breaks down why that happens — the same thing that makes co-op games feel social (full shared information) is exactly what lets one person take over. Then we look at the two design tools that actually fix it: hidden information (giving each player something only they control) and split-the-table pressure (throwing enough problems at once that the group has to divide up).

We also talk about what studying this problem taught us at Pektis — even though our own games, Fintastic Sea (an ecosystem-building card game) and Wanderlust (a route-building travel game), are competitive. The lesson still applies: every player, in every game, needs a reason to care about their own turn.

Pektis Studio is an indie board game publisher. We make games and we talk honestly about how they're designed.

Why Games Need to Be Boring Before They Get Good

26. August 2026 um 18:00

💾

Why do the best board games feel slow at the start and then click all at once? This is the psychology of engine building — one of the most satisfying board game mechanics, and one of the most misunderstood.

We break down why engine-building games are engineered to feel boring for the first twenty minutes and euphoric by the end: the acceleration curve and delayed gratification, why a combo you find yourself feels better than one you're taught (a close cousin of the IKEA effect), the constant tension between improving your engine and cashing it in for points, and the runaway leader problem — where one player's engine snowballs so hard everyone else checks out, and what designers actually do to stop that from happening.

Whether you're a player who wants to know why your favorite engine builders feel the way they do, or a designer working on your own game, this is a look under the hood at how engine building actually works — from a studio that's shipped two games and is building a third.

Examples pulled from our own games: Fintastic Sea (an ecosystem-building card game where creatures compound each other's value) and Wanderlust (a route-building travel game where your network accelerates the longer it runs).

Pektis Studio is an indie board game publisher. We make games, and we talk honestly about how they're designed.

There Are Only 4 Board Game Players

19. August 2026 um 16:30

💾

There are only four board game players — and all four are at your table.

The friend who takes ten minutes on one turn isn't being difficult. The one who can't remember the score but can recount the entire game isn't playing wrong. The one who loses on purpose to test a combo, and the one who keeps wandering into the kitchen — none of them are the problem.

They're playing four different games at the same table. And whether that's a great night or a frustrating one is mostly a design question, not a friendship question.

In this video I break down the four player types by what they actually do at a table, then get into the harder part: how you design a single board game that gives all four of them a real reason to care. That means visible efficiency benchmarks for the optimizer, narratable outcomes for the storyteller, undocumented combos for the tinkerer, and something to do during downtime for the socializer — but those are patches. The real answer is overlapping win routes, and I show you a mechanic from our own game where two completely different player types use the same zone in two completely different ways, and both of them win.

If a board game has ever made you feel like you were the problem at the table, this one's for you.

Why Your Brain Loves Taking Risks in Board Games(Push your luck)

12. August 2026 um 16:30

💾

You know you should stop. Everyone at the table is telling you to stop. You push again anyway — and in that moment, it doesn't feel like a mistake. It feels right.

That's not greed. That's push-your-luck — one of the most powerful psychological mechanics in board game design, and one of the reasons games like Incan Gold, Can't Stop, and Diamant get their hooks into you so fast.

In this video, we break down the actual psychology behind why your brain craves uncertain rewards more than guaranteed ones — and why that "one more push" feeling isn't a character flaw, it's just how your brain is wired to respond to risk. We'll walk through what push-your-luck mechanics actually are, why designers build games around this exact feeling on purpose, and what separates a push-your-luck game that feels thrilling from one that just feels random.

As a board game design studio that's shipped two games and is deep in development on a third, we talk about this from the inside — how we actually think about risk, reward curves, and player psychology when we're building mechanics ourselves.

Why Werewolf Makes You Question Everything

05. August 2026 um 16:00

💾

Ever notice how you start reading your best friend differently the second a hidden role enters the game? That's not paranoia — that's the design working exactly as intended.

In this video, we break down the psychology behind hidden role games (Werewolf, Secret Hitler, Shadow Hunters, Battlestar Galactica) — why they turn trust into a weapon, what "information asymmetry" actually does to your brain, and the impossible line every designer has to walk between a player who looks guilty and one who is guilty.

Improving your board game pitching skills is the single most effective way to get your prototype signed by a publisher.
I recently spent time evaluating various concepts from designers, and the contrast between a winning pitch and one that falls flat is stark.
