342 | How To Make A Great History Game (and Avoid A Bad One) | with Jason and Dr. Patrick Rael

16. August 2022 um 14:30
Jason continues the conversation with Dr. Patrick Rael from Bowdoin College and the Ludica blog on BGG. We discuss the meaning of a historical game, what they are and what they are not, and how games get it wrong. In essence, history games should present counterfactuals. They should allow us to imagine and game out different ways that history could have gone. When a "history" game does not do that, it can fall in to the pit traps that I have identified on many other Good Trouble shows. #226: Space Station Phoenix

The Smart Car was truly out-of-the-box thinking. "Why do passenger cars all have to be the way they are?" asked some clever group of designers, and designed the minimalistic teensy Smart Car. Of course, the challenges posed by manufacturing the little thing, or driving the little thing on a highway, or walking away from a crash in the little thing, proved to be compelling arguments in favour of more traditional passenger car manufacture. What I'm saying is that sometimes the box exists for a reason, notwithstanding the virtues of experimentation.

Episode 203: Scout, Trailblazers, Ankh: Gods of Egypt

16. August 2022 um 02:45

While Sarah hosts the episode, Jules and Adrian are snuggling together at Adrian's house. The crew discuss Jules' holiday and the resulting gaming bonanza with Adrian and Def over the past week. Meanwhile in Sizzling Games, Sarah is hand-making and trick-taking, Jules has been avoiding fails and blazing trails and Adrian is defying odds and moving Gods.

We also recap last week's Question of the Pod: Are you more likely to love a game if you win the first time you play it? Thanks to everyone who contributed and shared their experiences.

Finally, in Swear An Oath, Adrian blames Jules and babies for not playing Hues and Cues, Jules played all of the game modes in Trailblazers, and Sarah still has burncycle eyeing her off from the shelf. New oaths include Scout (Adrian), a non-committal lucky-dip (Jules), and to complete Mission 50 of The Crew (Sarah).

Question of the Pod: What game did you expect to hate and then after you played it you went and bought it?

Sizzling Games: Scout (15:15), Trailblazers (21:30), Ankh (35:15)

Question of the Pod Recap (59:35)

Swear An Oath: (1:21:04)
