#355: Rise & Fall

Von: Pickaxe
08. April 2025 um 12:00

When is a thing like another thing? Is Albedo like Core Worlds? Is Cat Blues like Rummy? Is Through the Desert like Go? Is a nudge as good as a wink to blind bat? Are all Roll & Writes inferior to Roll a 6, Win a Cookie? Is Christophe Boelinger France's Vlaada Chvátil? Probably, because it's all just like Mage Knight in the end.

We are back again for another riveting episode of RDTN. But there is a surprise in this episode, there is somewhat a theme with the games we played. We are going to be talking about dice driven euros, meaning a euro with dice. Okay, that could have gone without saying. Not all games we talk about are euro dice, so don’t miss those discussions as well.

When you get a chance after listening to the episode, we would appreciate taking the time over at Boardgamegeek and giving us a vote for best podcast. Thank you in advance.

Episode 72: Davey's Chop Shop

It's your turn...to click here to send us your comments on the show

Davey is back as first player after wrestling control from Tambo and remember the good old days of "Pimp My Ride" with Tim Westwood.  Davey channels his inner Westwood along with airhorns in our new version "Davey's Chop Shop" where we take board games and give them a glow up.  Will the games be improved? or are we left with just a bag of knackers? Lets face it...we're not designers so our opinions are just for entertainment only.

FIRST PLAYER: Davey
OTHER PLAYERS: JP, Rob & Tambo

In this episode you'll learn:
- that co-op trick taking causes high fiving and whooping in Fellowship of the Ring: The Trick Taking Game by Office Dog
- our thoughts on the newest "span" game Finspan by Stonemaier Games
- how JP has become a rogue AI and loving life (artificial life) in Compile by Greater Than Games
- that Rob has FINALLY got his copy of Elder Scrolls: BOTSE by Chip Theory Games and is now neck deep in neoprene
- whether our games which come out of the chop shop are worthwhile contenders for the hobby space...probably not you know us by now.

Boardgames To Go 240 - Dice Tower West and the Mark Madness 2025 Champions

The annual voting/predicting competition called Mark Madness is now finished. The results are posted with the rest of the updates for episode 239, and here co-host Eryn Roston returns one last time to share the winners. Unconscious Mind was our collective favorite for game cover art, and Adam Brocker is this year's winner. The plan now is for Adam to help me run next year's Mark Madness, in 2026. Next, I share my time at Dice Tower West. This is the second year in a row that I've gone to this national boardgame convention. Is it national? I think so. It's certainly big. Held in Las Vegas every March, that's a destination I can reach by car. I join a bunch of friends there and we play most games together. Besides a number of fresh & new ones, the buddies I got to this con with enjoy focusing one entire day on old games. We define that as games more than 25 years old. Last year that went to 1999, and now we included other titles published in 2000.

People have favourably described our physical appearances as "borderline tolerable" and "just short of hideous", and that was just our mothers. In light of this, we put ourselves forward as candidates for all manner of game show. Mark is quite fond of Rice-a-Roni and thus would be more than happy to just have a consolation prize, and Walker just wants to spin something as hard as he can. Better reinforce your props.
