On this almost chiaroscuro episode of the Shut Up & Sit Down Podcast, Tom and Pip are chatting about games that could not be more different. First up, Rats of Wistar - a crunchy engine-building game with rats and cards and being as efficient as possible within a strict turn limit. That’s followed up with Dro Polter and Rafter Five - two Oink games that are some of their silliest yet.
Ambie and Crystal discuss a couple games they played recently, including Infiltraitors, Math Rush: Addition & Subtraction, and Ceres. Then, we talk about ways your group can pick which game to play when no one knows what they want to play!

Sometimes a game has a conceit so good, that it's the only description you need to sell someone on it. Let's call it the hook. Do all games have them, or is it something that only a certain subcategory of game can get away with - and why don't they all just print that on the box cover? Before we get the hook, we talk about Havalandi, Courtisans, 12 Chip Trick, and Dune Imperium: Uprising.

Kaboom! It's time for another chock-a-block episode of the Secret Cabal! Today Tony and Jamie start out by talking about their experiences delving into Board Game Arena. Then the gang gets into all the games they've been playing, both digital and analog, including Castles of Burgundy, Robinson Crusoe Adventures on the Cursed Island, Altar Quest, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Slaughterhouse, and Junk Drawer. Then after Tony T proves his merit as the best damned tabletop gaming newsman in history, the gang gets into a discussion about Randomness vs Determinism in board gaming. This time, Tom, Julie, and Eric discuss the pitfalls of April Fools gags before highlighting the highs and lows of bargain hunting. We confront a listener-submitted dilemma from the mailbag, and we share some Roses, Thorns, and Hula Hoops.
00:45 - Cruise Hype and an Unexpected Musical Rant
While we have little experience with Ed Sullivan's TV offerings, his legacy is a fascinating one. While he capitulated to pressure during the Red Scare, he did show remarkable courage in platforming African American performers despite opposition from his sponsors. Quite surprising is that the illness that eventually killed him was kept a secret from him by his family, a practise that was already frowned on in the United States by the seventies but is still widespread in many parts of the world.

There is a duality in first time plays, at least when you’re playing with a mind to reviewing. One path leads to potential, the other to the bin. A first time play can reveal quirks and kinks that promise an interesting second or third or fourth and beyond plays; exploration and indulgence. It can equally reveal a design you never wish to revisit. On today’s episode - two board games. Arcs and Salton Sea. A remix of space board games and a trudge through the bleak world of mining lithium. Each a representative of both polar opposites of first impressions.

This week's guest is the designer of the Undaunted series and Mandala, Trevor Benjamin. We talk about growing up in Canada, the purpose of language and the process of game design...but which games did he choose?
In this episode of the news we give new backers their exclusive nicknames and Ben speaks to Ian Brody abut the upcoming expansion for War of the Rings The Card Game, Fire and Swords.
Alright chummers, listen up. This datastream kicks off with the Lords revealing their fresh-off-the-press Shadowrun personas for Bender's upcoming run. After that, they dive into their ongoing Call of Cthulhu gig, swapping tales and tactics from the madness-inducing adventures they're caught up in. Then, things get real juicy as they roll into a deep convo about the tricksy abilities us players can exploit and how game masters can keep a lid on the power we wield. Dig it and stay frosty out there in the sprawl!
This week Dave has us betting against each other, planning game night and singing songs of course.

It is said that both politics and religion are not good conversational fodder among people you don't know well (and perhaps not even for people with whom you are close), but sadly those are among Mark's favourite topics. The sun having been devoured may cause the astronomers to be delighted, but Mark knows a portent when he sees one, and he is confident some kind of sacrifice to appease violent spirits is in order. Walker escalates things by invoking the divine right of kings, the intersection of religion and politics, but then again escalation is Walker's default instinct. Further proof of Fenrir's influence, no doubt!
