In this aristocratic episode of the Shut Up & Sit Down Podcast, Tom and Quinns are talking about just one game - Obsession! We’re chatting about the second edition of this cult hit alongside its Upstairs, Downstairs and Wessex expansions. Enjoy!
Well, we've returned, and some of us are a little worse for wear, but if a week off doesn't get us back into gear, nothing will. Gen Con is behind us, and Mark, who sadly couldn't make the con, quizzes us about our highlights of the show. Before we cast our minds back to Indiana, we talk about Cat in the Box, Formosa Tea, and Twilight Inscription.
02:14 - Cat in the Box 08:31 - Formosa Tea 15:32 - Twilight Inscription 26:26 - Games we played at Gen Con 26:50 - Splendor Duel 33:38 - Green Team Wins 35:06 - Empire's End 38:23 - Kites 39:34 - Good Puppers 42:57 - War of the Ring: The Card Game 43:52 - Anunnaki: Dawn of the Gods 46:28 - Freezer pants forever
In episode 255, The gang starts out with a story from back in high school and dive right into the games we've been playing including Catan Starfarers, Age of Atlantis, The Crew: Mission Deep Sea, Nidavellir, Marvel Dice Throne, Kitty Paw and Star Trek Missions. Then the Founders jump into a deep dive review of The Great Wall from Awaken Realms. Then after Tony T gives us a rundown of all the most important news items from around the tabletop gaming world, the game returns to a discussion topic from the past regarding Replaybility and how it impacts our enjoyment, our perception of value and how it affects our reviews. The Great Wall Overview 01:09:15, The Great Wall Review 01:13:42, The News with Tony T 01:46:17, Revisiting Replaybility 02:42:53
Jason continues the conversation with Dr. Patrick Rael from Bowdoin College and the Ludica blog on BGG. We discuss the meaning of a historical game, what they are and what they are not, and how games get it wrong. In essence, history games should present counterfactuals. They should allow us to imagine and game out different ways that history could have gone. When a "history" game does not do that, it can fall in to the pit traps that I have identified on many other Good Trouble shows.

The Smart Car was truly out-of-the-box thinking. "Why do passenger cars all have to be the way they are?" asked some clever group of designers, and designed the minimalistic teensy Smart Car. Of course, the challenges posed by manufacturing the little thing, or driving the little thing on a highway, or walking away from a crash in the little thing, proved to be compelling arguments in favour of more traditional passenger car manufacture. What I'm saying is that sometimes the box exists for a reason, notwithstanding the virtues of experimentation.

While Sarah hosts the episode, Jules and Adrian are snuggling together at Adrian's house. The crew discuss Jules' holiday and the resulting gaming bonanza with Adrian and Def over the past week. Meanwhile in Sizzling Games, Sarah is hand-making and trick-taking, Jules has been avoiding fails and blazing trails and Adrian is defying odds and moving Gods.
We also recap last week's Question of the Pod: Are you more likely to love a game if you win the first time you play it? Thanks to everyone who contributed and shared their experiences.
Finally, in Swear An Oath, Adrian blames Jules and babies for not playing Hues and Cues, Jules played all of the game modes in Trailblazers, and Sarah still has burncycle eyeing her off from the shelf. New oaths include Scout (Adrian), a non-committal lucky-dip (Jules), and to complete Mission 50 of The Crew (Sarah).
Question of the Pod: What game did you expect to hate and then after you played it you went and bought it?
