10. August 2022 um 12:00
Dr. Patrick Rael from Bowdoin College and the Ludica blog on BGG rejoins the show to get wonky about history in games! In Part One of our exploration, we discuss whether war games indeed tell better history than Euro games. Dr. Rael believes that is the current state of things, but it does not have to be so. Episode 10: Mindclash of the titans

It's your turn...to click here to send us your comments on the show

Our first player Davey returns and we're going in heavy, well it's difficult to not when you've devoted an episode around one of our favourite publishers "Mindclash Games".

FIRST PLAYER: Davey
OTHER PLAYERS: JP & Kerley

OVERVIEW
In this episode our new "First Player" Davey takes us around the world in complex, heavy cardboard that is Mindclash Games.  In this episode you'll learn:

- How Beckys recent purchase of Spirit Island is fast becoming a firm favourite in the Kerley household
- That JP loves role playing the captain in Unfathomable a bit too much, "Throw him in the brig"
- that Davey is finally getting his copy of Clank! Legacy to the table
- How we rank the main 4 games from Mindclash (Cerebria, Anachrony, Trickerion and Perseverance)
- how we "try" to answer the question of why do we buy board games and not play them

#225: Carnegie

Von: Pickaxe
09. August 2022 um 12:00
There was a time you could just stroll in a big box store in the United States and just buy a miniatures skirmish game that was actually pretty good. Sure, it didn't have analog movement or anything, but it used true line of sight and had amazing plastic terrain. So much plastic. Like, a whole lot. One the one hand, Hasbro says they're bringing HeroScape back, but on the other, ain't no way it's coming back the same as it was. They're going to bleed us dry for those little pre-painted dolls--even assuming they're still pre-painted, that is.

Games Played Last Week:
02:22 -My Father's Work (T.C. Petty III, Renegade Game Studios, 2022)
04:20 -Kleos (Jim Kavanagh, Azure Horizon Games, 2021)

13:48 -Catch the Moon (Fabien Riffaud & Juan Rodriguez, Bombyx, 2017)
15:09 -A Feast for Odin: The Norwegians (Gernot Köpke & Uwe Rosenberg, Feuerland Spiele, 2018)

Episode 202: Clinic, Flesh & Blood, Five Tribes

09. August 2022 um 02:45

Sarah is back so Def and Conor join her to discuss Texan hospitality, the trickiness of Trickerion, tenderhooks vs tenterhooks, and theorising on Vital Lacerda's research methods for Escape Plan. Meanwhile in Sizzling Games, Sarah has been running out of patients (see what I did there?), Conor has been creating chaos in a collectable card-game, and Def has been taking tribes to task.

We recap last week's Question of the Pod: What game from your collection always makes it back to your table?

Finally, in Swear An Oath, Sarah and Def put a curse on Ian O'Toole's house for teaching On Mars to Dan before they had a chance, but Conor came through on his oath and relived some family memories by playing the new edition of Key To The Kingdom. New oaths include Viscounts of the West Kingdom: Keeper of the Keys (Conor), playing Marvel Champions solo (Def), and playing burncycle solo (Sarah)

Question of the Pod: Are you more likely to love a game if you win the first time you play it?

Sizzling Games: Clinic (22:00), Flesh & Blood (35:25), Five Tribes (48:20)

Question of the Pod Recap (1:00:00)

Given that we hyped up all those games last week, it's only fair that we prepare ourselves for the aftermath. Times are bad. Children no longer listen to their elders and everyone is running a Kickstarter. When I started this hobby I had no idea I would get a crash course in international shipping and logistics. Back in the day you might have had a friend in Germany send you the hot new thing, now you're tracking to see when the container ship with your stuff gets to leave port in China.

Episode 201: Vengeance: Roll ’n Fight, Dead Man’s Draw, Marvel Champions: The Mad Titan’s Shadow

02. August 2022 um 02:45

Join Mitch, Conor and Dan as they recap the Patreon JackBox night, take on the Transformers deck-builder, and discuss their continued incompetence in Hadrian's Wall. In Sizzling Games: Mitch has been dealing dice-induced damage, Dan has been dueling decks but drawing dead, and Conor has been mixing it with Marvel's Mad Titan.

It's time to announce the winner of the Bracket Battle! Thanks to everyone in the community who contributed, voted and shaped the battle over 63 rounds. It was a hell of a tournament, but there can only be one winner!!

We have a new segment: Question of the Pod! This week we want to hear from you: What game from your collection always makes it back to the table? Find the Question on our FaceBook Community or in the #podcast-chat channel on our Discord, and share your thoughts.

Finally, in Swear An Oath, Dan and Conor still haven't played Great Western Trail (much to Mitch's utter disappointment), but then again Mitch didn't play Marvel Dice Throne either. But the lads all double-down with new oaths: Deckscape (Dan), Key to the Kingdom (Conor), Welcome to the Moon (Mitch).
