In this hodgepodge episode of the Shut Up & Sit Down Podcast Tom, Quinns, and Ava are rambling through a trilogy of games! First up, we’re chatting about the kid-friendly draft-’em-up Draftosaurus before moving onto more deceitful, meatier fare in The Court of Miracles. Lastly, The Transcontinental pulls up to the station and we load it full of chat and opinions.

In this episode of Voices from the Solitude we get an update from the owner of board game cafe, The Ludoquist. We discuss life after lockdown and the health of the industry.
Given that we hyped up all those games last week, it's only fair that we prepare ourselves for the aftermath. We look back at some of the most famous and infamous games of yesteryear that were very highly anticipated, and wonder what became of them. Before we relive the comedown, we talk about Master Word, Living Forest, and Tidal Blades: Heroes of the Reef.

Jason Furie from Backerkit joins the show to share about an exciting new initiative in crowdfunding! We're used to Kickstarter being the main home for crowdfunded projects. Backerkit has been in the game for 10 years as a pledge manager and providing other services, so they are now making the leap to provide an alternative that emphasizes listening and a ground-up approach. Jason gets into building community, listening to creators, upcoming projects from Cephalophair Games, Greater Than Games, Restoration Games, and more!

Times are bad. Children no longer listen to their elders and everyone is running a Kickstarter. When I started this hobby I had no idea I would get a crash course in international shipping and logistics. Back in the day you might have had a friend in Germany send you the hot new thing, now you're tracking to see when the container ship with your stuff gets to leave port in China.

Join Mitch, Conor and Dan as they recap the Patreon JackBox night, take on the Transformers deck-builder, and discuss their continued incompetence in Hadrian's Wall. In Sizzling Games: Mitch has been dealing dice-induced damage, Dan has been dueling decks but drawing dead, and Conor has been mixing it with Marvel's Mad Titan.
It's time to announce the winner of the Bracket Battle! Thanks to everyone in the community who contributed, voted and shaped the battle over 63 rounds. It was a hell of a tournament, but there can only be one winner!!
We have a new segment: Question of the Pod! This week we want to hear from you: What game from your collection always makes it back to the table? Find the Question on our FaceBook Community or in the #podcast-chat channel on our Discord, and share your thoughts.
Finally, in Swear An Oath, Dan and Conor still haven't played Great Western Trail (much to Mitch's utter disappointment), but then again Mitch didn't play Marvel Dice Throne either. But the lads all double-down with new oaths: Deckscape (Dan), Key to the Kingdom (Conor), Welcome to the Moon (Mitch).
Sizzling Games: Vengeance: Roll n Fight (31:15), Dead Man's Draw (43:20), Marvel Champions: The Mad Titan's Shadow (51:40)

Openers: Root, My Gold Mine, and LAMA DicePlease join us on the Boardgames To Go discord server where you can chat online with other podcast listeners. The Spiel des Jahres and Kennerspiel des Jahres awards were announced last month. Congratulations to the designers and publishers of Cascadia and Living Forest. These are still the awards with the most worldwide influence and importance, despite coming from just one corner of it--Germany. However, in this episode I'm not talking very much about those recent winners. Instead, my friend and frequent podcast guest Greg Pettit joins me on the mic to talk about the previous ten years of winners. If these awards are as big of a deal as I say, then shouldn't the winners from the previous decade still be popular & relevant? Still on the table in our game groups? Let's talk about that. The yardstick to compare them against is Catan. Actually, you can add [thing=9209]Ticket to Ride[/ticket], too. Both of those games won the Spiel des Jahres many years ago. We'll be coming to the 30th anniversary of Catan in just a few more years, and Ticket To Ride is approaching its 20th anniversary. In a hobby that bemoans the short shelf life of new titles, these two continue to be everywhere. If you run into a new person at school or work that has played "our games," there's a good chance they've played Catan and Ticket To Ride. THAT'S influence & importance. Do any of the latest decade's Spiel des Jahres winners have that kind of impact? I'm not sure if any of them do, though a few may have some staying power. Greg & I talk about that, combining our own opinions & observations with "data" from BGG Rankings and what's on mass market retail shelves at Target or Barnes & Noble. In the US (and maybe Canada?) those are a good litmus test of staying power with the larger public of game-players. The Kennerspiel winners are a little different. Whether these are more for "gamers" or not is up for debate. Here the BGG ranking is probably a better measure. Interestingly enough, the SdJ's have a more constant "decay" in their popularity and ranking, while the Kenners have more highs & lows: titles that have done a better job sticking around, and others that are dropping off. The nature of this award has been shifting, too. I hope you enjoy the discussion.
Closers: Greg says games need to be introduced & taught more than simply given as gifts. Then Mark mentions the enduring power of Dungeons & Dragons. Somehow they both talk about giving games away. -Mark
This week Shelley and I get an oldie but goodie to the table playing

Sorry for the less than stellar quality if the sound on this (and next week's) podcasts. I forgot to plug the recorder into the miser properly, hence the echo-y sound quality. I hope the content is still worth your time.

Famed game designer Bruno Faidutti joins the show for a civil discussion about our different perspectives as gamers and game creators. We discuss the differences between American and European tastes and sensibilities, how things have changes over the years, and how different gamers get different messages when they engage with a game on the table. This was a wide ranging and interesting conversation between two people who don't see the world in quite the same way, but who were able to find some common ground. I hope this serves as a model for similar types of conversations in our hobby moving forward.
