332 | Why Nazis in War Games are Fine, but the Colonizer in a Euro Game Had to Go | with Jason

Jason is very pleased to share about Puerto Rico 1897 - a new story for the classic game! This video follows up on the official announcement on a recent BGG Blog. In this short reflection, I discuss the most common piece of critical feedback: the idea that it's bad to play a "bad guy" in a game. In short, it's fine to play a bad guy, but it matters how it's done. I think war games have done a better job than Euro games. I articulate my reasoning here. #221: Sakura Arms

Von: Pickaxe
12. Juli 2022 um 14:07
It's a weird little thematic disconnect when you're not sure who or what your avatar in-game is. Perhaps we have swallowed corporate personhood so fully that we can easily accept playing as a corporation but balk a little at an amorphous group of power brokers--or a faceless protagonist channeling tree spirits.

12. Juli 2022 um 02:45

Join Mike, Jules and Conor as they discuss dexterity games, playing games with Thinker Themer, and taking on the forces of evil (completely unrelated to Amy and Maggie from Thinker Themer). Meanwhile when it comes to Sizzling Games, Mike has been making montages with meaningless momentos, Conor has been creating castles and controlling the countryside, and Jules has been winning wisdom with worldly Witches (again, not Amy and Maggie...)

In the Board Game Bracket we settle the last match-up, Anachrony vs Architects of the West Kingdom, before we cue up the the first Semi-Final Battle: The Quacks of Quedlinburg vs Raiders of the North Sea. To make sure your favourite goes through to the Grand Final make sure you vote on our socials.

Finally, in Swear An Oath Mike finished a games of Viscounts of the West Kingdom and also played Picture Perfect. #188 - How Do You Pitch a Game? (w/Tim Clare)

08. Juli 2022 um 20:48

Ava: Well look at that! It’s an interview. Well something like that. I spent the evenings of the ‘United’ Kingdom’s Game Exposition chatting with my favourite podcaster-poet-editor-writer Tim Clare, then convinced him to get together to have a chat about a thing. We’re offering tips and thoughts on how to ‘pitch a game’, both at a convention, and in your very own home. Do we stay on topic? Occasionally! But hopefully it’s a fun listen.

Go find Tim on twitter or his very own website timclarepoet.co.uk. I genuinely think Death of a Thousand Cuts, and particularly the couch to 80k bootcamp/100 day writing challenge are the absolute best ways to get stuck into creative writing, and his first page critiques (the reason I thought he’d be a great person to speak to about this) are the absolute best writing advice you can get! Check him out, he’s lovely.

I’m hoping to put together a few more interviews and other ‘special’ podcasts over the coming months, so do let us know what you think. Opinions and suggestions welcome to ava@shutupandsitdown.com or on our website. If it doesn’t sound up your street, do feel free to skip it! It’ll probably be a normal pod with more familiar voices next time you visit!

330 | Why Do Board Gamers Say "The Teach" | A Reflection | with Jason

(Jason here) It's a little peculiar, right? In no other hobby, or walk of life, do we say "the teach." But for board gamers, we know exactly what we mean - that necessary time before any new game that we need to spend in order to have our fun. I give a theory on why we say "the teach", drawing from my background in psychology and communication. I think it's great, and I fully support playing with language and coming up with new ways to say things. Episode 252: The Snallygaster Situation and The Production, Gameplay and Cost of Board Games

06. Juli 2022 um 07:55
Alrighty Cabalists, it’s time for yet another major dose of Secret Cabal insubordinate, irreverence and meshugenah nonsense! Today the gang dives into the games they’ve been getting into including Circadians: First Light, Buck Rogers Battle for 25th Century, Lost Ruins of Arnak, Bretwalda, Wild Serengeti, Dutch Blitz and Rising Sun. Then Don, Jamie and Chris get busy with a review of Renegade Games’ The Snallygaster Situation: Kids on Bikes Board Game. And of course, as usual, Tony T gives us what hell of a roller coaster ride through the world of tabletop gaming in his bananas news segment. The show is then closed out with the discussion about board game production and how that may affect the fun positively and negatively. #220: Dice Realms

Von: Pickaxe
05. Juli 2022 um 12:00
Enjoy the works of Thomas Lehmann while you can! Despite the lack of player interaction of Dice Realms, Mr. Lehmann has violated local, provincial, and federal law by not supplying a solo mode. International treaty has also been flouted by the absence of a campaign. I fear he may be put in boardgame jail as a consequence. Can he build a tableau convincing enough as his defence? His attorney, Dr. Gonzo, does not inspire much confidence.
