Shelley and I spend this week going through the second half of my curated list of games arriving at Essen 2021 in less than 2 weeks. Here's a rundown of the games discussed (organized alphabetically by publisher):
In this chaotic 158th episode of the Shut Up & Sit Down podcast, Ava, Tom and Quinns are slamming bugs into walls! We’re talking about the expansive box-ticker Hadrian’s Wall alongside the entomologically-inclined wrasslin’ of Kabuto Sumo! We also have some brief chats about our recent video reviews of Descent: Legends of the Dark and Burgle Bros 2: The Casino Capers - two be-coloned sequels of varying quality!
Apologies for some slight background noise at times in this one - all three of us had various drilling going on nearby that was hard to weasel out properly! And, as Quinns mentions at the end of this one, there won’t be a podcast for the next couple of weeks while we focus on getting prepped for AwSHUX. See you toward the end of October for a live special!
What two things would you miss if you were to live on the moon? That’s right, it’s coffee, and the ability for sound to echo whilst you’re doing a moonwalk in vacuum. With that tenuous link between this episode’s board games established, I can tell you a little bit more what to expect from each. Luna Capital is yet another spin on the tableau building formula, Echoes brings something fresh by giving us our very first audio mystery game, and Coffee Traders is this episode’s chunky boy, giving most euro games a run for their money in terms of complexity.

Episode 145: Architects of the West Kingdom, Terraforming Mars: Ares Expedition, Dinosaur Island Rawr'n'Write, Whistle Mountain
Surprise! Have you ever played a game that pleasantly surprised you? On this episode Steve, Def and Mike discuss games that they like but don't necessarily fit their normal game style. Do you have any games in your collection that stand out from the rest?
In our Sizzling Games segment Def has revisited Architects of the West Kingdom with four and five players and has even been exploring the asymmetric player powers. Mike has two games to Sizzle: Dinosaur Island Rawr'n'Write, and Terraforming Mars: Ares Expedition and is in love with both. Steve finally got Whistle Mountain to his gaming group and loved the "Tetris on top of each other" fun.
In the Bracket Battle 2.0 we check in on the current battle: Anachrony vs Kanban EV. We then dip into the mail bag for The Roast. Steve shares his "enlist or die" strategy when playing the Crimean faction in Scythe, Mike tells us about his longest ever game of Zombiecide, and Def counts on one hand the games he can beat his wife in. We also discuss our favourite meats to BBQ, hardest games to learn, and game mechanics we could do without.
Finally, in Swear An Oath Steve swear to play the Campaign Mode for Smart Phone Inc , Def swears to play a few more planets in Unsetlled, and Mike swears to graduate from the roll'n'write and play Dinosaur World.

It was a thrill to have a pan-Anglo alliance together to raise money for Food Banks Canada, with many current or prior Commonwealth countries represented either on the stream or in the donations. That is globalism we can get behind here at SVWAG. That said, let us make our next planned fundraising endeavour yet more international: a Kickstarter campaign to fund Mark's acquisition of a Ferrari Portofino. Equally altruistic, yes?

Episode 144: Special Guest - Kim Brebach from Good Games Publishing, My Little Scythe, Cascadia, Land vs Sea
On this episode Sarah, Jules and Adrian are joined by Kim Brebach from Good Games Publishing. He talks about his journey into game design, his mission to find games that have incredible depth, and his development approach to playtesting new games.
In our Sizzling Games segment Adrian has been enjoying My Little Scythe with his family, Kim has discovered the joy of Cascadia, and both Jules and Sarah have been carefully placing (and stealing) tiles in Land vs Sea.
In the Bracket Battle 2.0 we announce the winner from last week's Blood Rage vs City of the Big Shoulders, and then launch our next battle: Anachrony vs Kanban EV. Jules and Adrian go head to head in this battle, so we have to call in an expert to split the difference! Make sure you vote for your favourite on our socials to make sure it goes through to the next round.
Finally, in Swear An Oath Jules has started painting his Unsettled miniatures but is still determined to beat that last level. Meanwhile Sarah completed The Initiative and Adrian has the 2010 edition of Vinhos lined up. Kim joins in the action and swears to revisit Scythe to reassess his opinion, and Jules, Adrian and Sarah all swear to have a Paint Party!
Unfortunately due to the current COVD-19 restrictions in NSW and VIC we have had to postpone the Game Days in both states. We are currently looking at new dates and we will communicate that to you ASAP.
