On this week’s episode of the Shut Up & Sit Down podcast, Matt, Tom & Ava sit around in a board game soup, rambling about a series of games that we’ve been playing in the darkest reaches of lockdown - and even go so far as to talk about some digital card games! The horror.
Join us for a bumbling episode where we talk about everything from the raucous Forgotten Waters to the pensive and tense The Crew, as well as a quick chat about Gloomhaven and its upcoming mini-adventure Jaws of The Lion. We’ll also be talking about all the recent games we’ve been streaming - such as the delectable 1s and 0s of Slay The Spire, and the existential dread of Mothership. Last, but not least, we'll be giving some positively DANGEROUS thoughts about Wingspan, a game that everyone can agree is QUITE NICE.
We asked for your questions, and you provided! Some of you used Instagram, some of you used voicemail, but however you reached out, your voice was heard. We chose only a few to answer (quality notwithstanding), but we'd love to keep doing this, so keep sending them in! Before we corral your correspondence, we talk about Gloomhaven, Terra Mystica, Bloom Town, and Starlink.
News so big it needs its own segment, which we have decided to call: The News.
Our humble podcast has been asked to take part in the upcoming BGG Virtual Con (June 24-28). The team at the Board Game BBQ will be hosting and playing virtual games over the course of the Virtual Con - bringing the international convention into the Australian Timezones!! We are truly flattered to be asked to participate and we look forward to meeting many of you online. (more details below)
The Sizzling Games this week includes roll 'n' write raptors in Welcome to Dino World, the card-drafting beachfronts of Santa Monica, and the compelling storylines of Above and Below.
The Topic of the Week is how to get new people into this addictive hobby. How to introduce people into board games, how to encourage new players to 'buy in' to gaming, and how to craft the ultimate Games Night at your place.
As always, everyone has their eye on Kickstarter, with the team torn between Nemesis and Terraforming Mars Big Box, before Mitch and Mike come our swinging representing their faves for the next round of the Board Game Bracket: Nemo's War vs 5 Minute Dungeon. Both pitch compelling arguments while Steve gets splinters from sitting on the fence.
Finally, in Swear An Oath, Mike has proudly fulfilled his first oath, Dungeon Petz, and is backing it up with Counterfeiters. Mitch put Maiden's Quest to rest and is really glad that he did (cue historic moment @1:25:03 ), and has decided to take a more surreal approach with Dreamscape. And Steve continues his Kemet-less run, but does manage to complete Space Base, and adds the beauty of Photosynthesis to his oath backlog.

Hey Now Cabalists! Today the gang starts out with a bit of celebration as we achieved all three of our Kickstarter Goals and The Cabal will go on! The the Founders get into some of the games they've been playing including The Shining, Pan Am The Game, Escape Room: The Game, Healthy Heart Hospital, Ghost Stories, and Arcadia Quest. Then the gang features Vital Lacerda's Escape Plan and look back at Lord of the Rings Journeys In Middle-Earth from Fantasy Flight Games. Tony T goes overboard with some crazy news stories (including the weirdest sex themed board game you've ever seen) and finally a short topic extravaganza including topics about Cthulhu in Kemet, What our other hobbies are and underrated game designers. In this show, we talk about Scooby-Doo Escape From the Haunted Mansion, Roll Player: Fiends and Familiers, Pan Am, Res Arcana, Fantastic Factories, and The Legend of Zelda: Clockwork Kingdom (Ganon's Tower). Geoff talks about fairness, we try to guess the average amount of games a gamer owns, and how many rules we can keep in our memory. Finally, we end the show talking about our favorite non-racing sports games!
Change is exactly like a starving polar bear, in that it is a frightening beast that will bite your face off. Despite that, we have changed the format of our episode notes in a startling act of courage. That said, as Robert Browning wrote, "One taste of the old time sets all to rights." It is in that spirit that we began, with the blessing of the Government of Ontario's health guidelines, to actually play games in meatspace again. We express our sincere condolences to those unfortunates living in situations where that is not safely feasible.

This week Steve, Def and Conor bring some bigger games to the BBQ - Everdell, Imperial Settlers: Empires of the North, and Clans of Caledonia. But does bigger mean better? Does a premium price mean a prized possession? Funny you should ask because that's the Topic of the Week: what makes a game valuable? The guys take a deep dive into the games that bring the most value for them.
Steve reveals the winner of the latest match-up on the Board Game Bracket - Dixit vs Bang: The Dice Game - before wrapping up with everyone's favourite segment: Swear An Oath. Def made amends for his failed oaths by playing both Cartographers and Glenmore II: Chronicles, Conor fudged his way through Tapestry by riding on the coat-tails of his sister, and Steve plays the sympathy card for leaving Kemet on the shelf. New oaths this week are Brass: Birmingham, Pandemic: Rapid Response, Space Base.
Sizzling Games:

Clans of Caledonia (26:08)

This week Steve and Jules welcome Adrian to the podcast as the team recap the first Board Game Bracket showdown, and there is a lot to unpack from both sides of the contest. Who came out on top - Gloomhaven or Pandemic? And did that game win on both the BGBBQ contributors bracket and the popular vote?
There are some unique games sizzling this week (and Steve proves that even a broken watch can be correct twice a day), and the topic of the week is Social Deduction Games. The team explores what sets these games apart from regular party games, and why lying, cheating, backstabbing and deception are just so much fun!
In our regular Kickstarter segment, Adrian shares what he has backed recently, and everyone comes to the party in the ever-popular segment Swear An Oath. Jules fulfilled his backlog of oaths by playing both Photosynthesis and Quoridor, before swearing to replay Explorers of the North Sea (and upping the level of difficulty of the oath by increasing the player count to five). Steve brought Detective: City of Angels to the table with very little fanfare from his family, and has been inspired by Jules to play Kemet this week. Finally, Adrian swears his first oath by refining his code-breaking skills with Decrypto.

I know this is going to come as a shock, but sometimes we get things wrong. As we've worked our way through the hobby, we've discovered that some positions we once held, aren't ones we still do. So it's time to revisit our past transgressions and come clean. Before we admit our mistakes, we talk about Tang Garden, Fast Forward: FORTRESS, and Race for the Galaxy.

Special thanks goes to What Does It Eat? for hopefully not being upset that we borrowed a snippet of their most excellent song F.O.S. before our theme. You can find them at whatdoesiteat.com.
