Episode 4: Saboteur, Ganz Schon Clever, Tapestry and Nemesis

28. Mai 2020 um 23:44

This episode is choc-full of gaming goodness as Steve, Jules, Conor and Def discuss all things miniatures; what defines a miniature game, what is the appeal, what are some good gateway games to start with, and why bother painting them? Of course, there are always sizzling games to talk about, and everyone seems to have their eye on Kickstarter. Finally, in Swear an Oath, Steve delivers a double-header by conquering both Teotihuacan and Underwater Cities, Conor pleased the Oath Gods and the Dice Gods by finally playing Dice Forge, however pride cometh before a fall for Def the Cartographer. Also, Jules doubles down on his missed Photosynthesis oath by adding Quoridor. Not to be outdone, Steve and Conor back-up their success with Minecraft: Builders and Biomes, and Tapestry respectively.

Sizzling Games: Saboteur (1:30), Ganz Schon Clever (9:35), Tapestry (16:50), Nemesis (27:15)

Weekly Topic: Miniature Games (32:25)

Kickstarter Discussion: Mini Express, War of Whispers, Railroad Ink Challenge, Viscounts of the West Kingdom (51:11)

Swear An Oath: (1:03:36)

#124: Constraints You Can See

28. Mai 2020 um 10:48

While all games have some restrictions, some games are more willing than others to let you go off the rails. For instance, some leave the economy entirely in the hands of the players, free to tank it if they please. We look at how games do (or don't) use player constraints to deliver unique experiences. Before we rein ourselves in, we talk about Tournay, Bullet♥︎, Wonder Woman: Challenge of the Amazons, and Container.

01:46 - Tournay 01:57 - Troyes 07:10 - Bullet♥︎ 10:44 - Wonder Woman: Challenge of the Amazons 17:15 - Container 28:30 - Games with and without constraints 28:51 - Food Chain Magnate 31:14 - Sidereal Confluence : Trading and Negotiation in the Elysian Quadrant 39:24 - Power Grid 40:01 - Flamme Rouge 42:25 - Startups and Zogen 43:02 - Diamant 43:28 - Crokinole 45:56 - Tigris and Euphrates 49:15 - The Estates

Express 60: The Golden Age of Intellectual Properties in Board Games

27. Mai 2020 um 07:55
In episode 60, Chris, Steve, Don, Tony and Jamie sit down to talk about what seems to be the golden age of intellectual properties in board games. Games using movies, tv shows, video games, books and more are becoming more and more thoughtful and well developed and many publishers are thriving from developing quality hobby minded board games developing games in this space. The Founders discuss this and pitch some ideas for IP board games that they would love to see happen.

#119: Clans of Caledonia

Von: Pickaxe
26. Mai 2020 um 12:00
We sometimes don't understand the appeal of food-based games, friends and neighbours. To be sure, we adore Food Chain Magnate, but that is not parasitic upon our sincere appreciation of (say) lemonade and pizza. There seem to be many games based on enthusiasm for beer, coffee, whiskey, spicy food, wine... Wait, I'm noticing a trend. Is our indifference to alcohol poisoning yet another area of life?!

Games Played Last Week:
-Gaia Project 1m01s (Jens Drögemüller & Helge Ostertag, Feuerland Spiele, 2017)
-Legacy of Dragonholt 2m55s (Nikki Valens with Daniel Clark, Tim Flanders, Annie VanderMeer Mitsoda, & Greg Spyridis, FFG, 2017)
-Race for the Galaxy 6m37s (Thomas Lehmann, Rio Grande Games, 2007)
-Star Wars: X-Wing Second Edition 11m30s(Jason Little & Frank Brooks, Fantasy Flight, 2018)
-Guards of Atlantis II: Tabletop MOBA 15m13s (Artyom Nichipurov, Wolff Designa, 2020)
-A War of Whispers 19m55s (Jeremy Stoltzfus, Starling Games, 2019)
-Tobago 24m49s (Bruce Allen, Zoch Verlag, 2009)
-TINYforming Mars 27m3s (Michael Bevilacqua, Web published, 2019)

News (and why it doesn't matter):
-Gen Con 2020 Cancelled 30m04s
-Schotten Totten 2 30m31s
-Wingspan App Beta 31m17s
-Kemet and Tribune Reprints on Kickstarter 31m52s

Feature Game: Clans of Caledonia 33m44s (Juma Al-JouJou, Karma Games, 2017)

#110 - The Death of Madeira 1000

22. Mai 2020 um 22:29

Quinns, Tom and Ava voyage boldly into the great boardgame unknown, this time without Matt’s assistance on the technology side of things! The result? A podcast that’s deeply flawed. Am I going to triple-check the edit to make sure the audio isn’t slipping and sliding around, crashing into itself like an ouroboros of waveforms? I’m sure you’ll be able to guess the answer to that question by just listening to it.

This week, we get covered in eldritch goop while talking about Cthulhu: Death May Die, barraged by dice AND pirates in Madeira, turned into candles with a Thousand Year-Old Vampire, and utterly BAFFLED by the interlocking systems in The Defence of Procyon III! We’ll also be talking a little about the games we’ve looked at recently, and discussing that stream.

Have a great weekend, everybody!
