Somewhere in Germany every year, a specialist team assembles to decide on the best board games ... that released in Germany that year ... that no one has ever heard of. Look, the Spiel des Jahres is a bit weird, and no one ever agrees about the winners, but we're going to talk about the nominees anyway, okay? Before ze Germans get here, we also talk about Glorantha: The Gods War, and Corinth. We also recap our weekend at Strategicon Gamex 2019. 02:05 - Glorantha: The Gods War 11:28 - Cthulhu Wars 20:06 - Corinth 27:27 - Strategicon Gamex 2019 28:52 - Now Boarding 32:25 - Spiel des Jahres 33:40 - Just One 34:44 - Werewords 36:05 - LAMA 38:46 - Who wins the Spiel des Jahres? 41:47 - Wingspan 42:35 - Detective: A Modern Crime Board Game 43:42 - Carpe Diem 44:39 - Who wins the Kennerspiel?
At last, we close out the podcast with a tempting question from our mailbag (55:54). If we could force board game fans the world over play one thing, what would we choose?
Bob and Ryan Craig, founders of One Day West Games, discuss how to design a tile-laying game.
Their game, Monster Highway, is a fast-playing tile laying game about escaping from a Godzilla style monster, and they have several other tiling games in the works.
This Game is Broken is released every two weeks and features Matthew Jude, Dave Luza, Christina Aimerito and Nick and Mike Murphy.
The show is devised by the whole gang and is produced and edited by Matthew Jude. If you would like Matthew to help you edit your podcast then contact him at: Matthewjudecooper@gmail.com

Names are powerful. The Spiel des Jahres means "game of the year" simpliciter, but for years we know that the juries have been casting a narrower and narrower net of what games thay would consider. It has become more of a specialized imprint, which is fine--but it's strange that the name still inspires such cachet. Anything with rules in excess of 3 or so pages seems now to be firmly beyond the pale as far as the SdJ is concerned. Ah, well, times change, and we are prone to fits of curmudgeonly behavior. We do at least give our rundown of the 3 nominated games.
